Tennessee hires Butch Jones as head football coach

Butch Jones wasn't Tennessee's first choice as its next football coach. The Volunteers think the former Cincinnati coach will prove he's the right choice.

Tennessee introduced Jones on Friday as its successor to Derek Dooley, who was fired Nov. 18 after going 15-21 in three seasons. Jones becomes the Volunteers' fourth coach in six seasons, ending a tumultuous couple of days for both parties. The new Vols coach said he was taking over "the best college football program in America."

Jones agreed to a six-year contract worth $18.2 million.

"We'll be working to be champions each and every day," Jones said. "We will be a champion in everything we do. That's not only on the field but off the field."

Jones, 44, has a 50-27 record in six seasons as a head coach. He went 27-13 in three seasons at Central Michigan and was 23-14 at Cincinnati the last three years. He now faces the task of rebuilding a former Southeastern Conference power that has posted three consecutive losing seasons.

Unbeaten Ohio State team honored

Thousands of fans gathered Friday to honor No. 3 Ohio State for its perfect season.

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman said the accomplishment deserves special recognition, and then unveiled a sign that read "12-0 Row" to be put at an undetermined street in the city.

Former Ohio State quarterback and 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith also presented the team with the Big Ten Leaders Division trophy.

The Buckeyes went 12-0 in Coach Urban Meyer's first season in Columbus, but were unable to play in a bowl because of NCAA violations under former coach Jim Tressel.

Etc.

New North Carolina State Coach Dave Doeren has made his first coaching hire, bringing in Ryan Nielsen to coach the defensive line and serve as recruiting coordinator. Nielsen spent the last two seasons at Northern Illinois under Doeren. ?Wyoming senior free safety Luke Ruff was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Football First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. ? Penn State and Pitt announced Friday they will play each other in 2018 and '19, extending a previous deal that revived the dormant series.
