How Old Were You When You Got Your First Computer? These days, most people at least have access to a computer from a very early age. You have to admit, though, that messing around on the family computer out in the living room is a very different thing than having a computer of your very own. So, we're curious:

Zuckerberg Launches A Tech Lobby, But What Will It Do Differently?

FWDusFacebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made headlines today on the announcement of his new technology lobby, FWD.us, that he formed with his powerful Silicon Valley friends. But, behind the starstruck stories of DC’s new power players, it should be noted that the technology industry already has a litany of lobbies, comprised of the same board members as FWD.us, who have been active in politics for years. Before everyone gets carried away, it’s worth understanding what tech money has gotten Silicon Valley already and what FWD.us will need to do to distinguish itself. What Already Exists The technology industry is handsomely represented in the halls of Congress. According to OpenSecrets, the industry’s lobbying coffers shoveled out $202 million in 2012, almost twice as much as in 2004 ($105M). Facebook even has its own Political Action Committee to fund specific candidates. And, to be sure, most major tech corporations have swanky DC diggs, where they throw elaborate champagne parties on rooftop decks (I have enjoyed their expensive appetizers many times). In addition in-house teams, there are a number of similar independent lobby groups, including the Internet Association, Engine Advocacy, TechNet, The Consumer Electronics Association, and The Silicon Valley Leadership Group–to name a few. Yahoo CEO Marrissa Mayer, a member of Zuckberg’s FWD.us, also sits on the board of Technet. Like the tech companies themselves, the varying lobbies disagree on thorny issues such as the Internet sales tax, which pits pro-taxation eBay against its digital rival, Amazon. But, there’s far more agreement than disagreement, especially on immigration reform. Immigration Reform Has Advocates Far More Powerful Than The Tech Titans FWD.us’s topic du jour is high-skilled immigration reform, which the entirety of the tech industry has been pushing for, for decades. As Zuckerberg echoed in his Washington Post OpEd, “To lead the world in this new economy, our workforce needs the most talented and hardest-working people. We need to train and attract the best.” Yet, despite a full court press by the most of the industry, and (an arguably more powerful) ally in New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, proponents of high-skilled immigration reform have yet to be successful. Last Winter, a bill, which aimed to expand high-skilled visas to more foreign-born science and engineering graduates of American universities, died largely because all the money in the world couldn’t get Democrats and Republicans to agree. We held a debate between high-skilled immigration reform expert, Vivek

Next move is unclear after Penn State case ruling

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? For months, the criminal case against three former Penn State administrators accused of covering up abuse complaints about Jerry Sandusky has been in limbo while a judge considered their request to have the case thrown out.

Judge Barry Feudale's ruling against Graham Spanier, Gary Schultz and Tim Curley could clear the way for a district judge to finally conduct the preliminary hearing that had once been scheduled for last December.

But Feudale's 16-page opinion and order anticipates that the defendants might want to take up the same issues he rejected before a county judge or a state appeals court. Lawyers in the case declined comment or didn't return messages.

Feudale's ruling says he doesn't have jurisdiction and denies their motion to throw out the grand jury report backing up the accusations.

5 Social Media Sites My Small Business Needs to Be On ...

Social media is big, so small businesses that want to grow and gain exposure need to take advantage of the trend.

How important is it for small businesses to socialize online?

Considering that an August 2012 study by the Pew Research Center revealed that more than 60 percent of men and 75 percent of women daily use social media for networking, equating to millions of people on the Internet, small businesses need to be where the people are.

Where Should We Be?

According to various social media professionals, the top 5 social media sites every small business should be on include the following, in alphabetical order:

  1. Facebook:? Who doesn?t know about Facebook? It?s one of the most popular social media sites online?approaching one billion users in early 2013?not only for personal use, but also for business use. Businesses can set up ?fan? pages and attract potential customers or clients who ?like? the page and follow it. Facebook is also useful for businesses to organize and share the news about public events or gatherings, or other company-related news.
  2. Google+ (G+):? The newcomer in 2011, Google+ appears to be the search engine giant?s entry in the social media world, with the power of its financial resources and reputation behind it. The basic premise and benefit for businesses is a Google+ account allows individuals to make use of Google?s search engine technology so it?s easy to demonstrate authorship of blog posts and other online content, complete with the writer?s photo, facilitating a higher click-through rate.
  3. LinkedIn:? LinkedIn probably has the most professional environment of the five social media sites.? The primary purpose of LinkedIn is to connect professionals and businesses, and share job leads and contacts. Many professional groups are also available in nearly any conceivable niche area for networking purposes.
  4. Pinterest: Another relative newcomer in the social media world, since 2010, Pinterest allows individuals to ?pin? images, photos, video, and other multimedia of interest into virtual ?boards? sorted by assigned categories. People can create favorite collections of items and share them with other people.
  5. Twitter:? Twitter, with its 140-character ?tweets? about anything and everything, is a 24/7/365 avenue for business exposure.? People can also follow an individual or business, read regular updates, and send/receive messages. Twitter also makes use of hash tags, designated with #, to allow people to track tweets about trending or popular topics.? For instance, someone may tweet a post and include something such as #smallbusiness or #entrepreneur.

How to Improve Engagement and Traffic on Social Media Sites

The first step to improve engagement and traffic on social media sites is to be there, consistently, participating and interacting with others.

When a small business makes its presence known, and shares what it has to offer in products and/or services, that?s an important step toward attracting traffic and engaging with potential customers.

All of the social media sites provide some sort of means to interact with others.

With some variations, most of the media sites allow people to create public posts, send private messages, engage in live chat, join groups, hold virtual events, and even participate in contests.

Ready, Set, Socialize!

As soon as a small business owner has read and digested this information, it?s time to get out there and socialize.

Being active in the five social media networks addressed can help a small business gain good exposure, as well as establish a good reputation, something that is especially important if false information has appeared in blog posts or social media circles.

After looking at the list, is your business as social as it can and should be?

US diplomat killed in Afghanistan car bombing hailed at memorial

By Renita D. Young

OAK PARK, Illinois (Reuters) - U.S. diplomat Anne Smedinghoff led a life of service from an early age, mourners said at a memorial service on Tuesday for the young Foreign Service worker who was killed last week in a car bombing in Afghanistan.

"She was a great model as a student," said Kevin Roche, a lifelong friend of Smedinghoff's who now teaches math at the high school they attended.

Fenwick High School, a Catholic school in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, held a memorial mass in honor of Smedinghoff, who graduated from the school in 2005 and from Johns Hopkins University in 2009.

"She was living a life of service, as well, not just to her classmates and friends, but to her community and the Oak Park community as a whole," Roche said after the service, which was attended by students, teachers, former classmates and members of her family.

Smedinghoff, 25, was killed along with four other Americans in a car bomb blast on Saturday as their convoy traveled in Zabul province to deliver textbooks to school children.

She had volunteered for the assignment in Afghanistan, where she served as an assistant information officer. Before that, she had been assigned to Caracas, Venezuela.

"I will remember her as a serenely beautiful champion for peace and justice," teacher Irene Drago said during the service.

Drago, who was Smedinghoff's Spanish teacher and is a faculty sponsor for the school's International Relations club, said her "quiet intelligence" and a gift for foreign languages helped lead Smedinghoff into a Foreign Service career.

As a student, Smedinghoff was part of the International Relations club, math team, cross country team and campus ministry, said Gerald Lordan, Fenwick's director of development.

Lordan encouraged students to follow her example, saying, "Nothing that Anne did is beyond your capacity."

In December, Smedinghoff returned to Fenwick to speak to students about her experiences in the Foreign Service.

"She encouraged students to know what's going on in the world and to try to make a difference," Reverend Richard Peddicord, the school's president, said before the service.

Fenwick senior Jack Miller was among the students who said after the service they were awed by Smedinghoff's drive to join the Foreign Service.

"It really is inspiring to me, thinking about what I want to do with my life, seeing a person being so motivated so quickly," Miller said.

Rob Portman Sees GOP Reaction to Same-Sex Marriage as 'Mixed'

ap will rob portman jef 130325 wblog Rob Portman Sees GOP Reaction to Same Sex Marriage as MixedPHOTO: Sen. Rob Portman, right, and his son, Will are seen in this undate family photo.

The Republican Party won't suffer from its opposition to same-sex marriage, according to one of the only two GOP senators who support it publicly.

"I'm not particularly worried about it," Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio told Politico's Mike Allen at an economy-focused breakfast event in Washington, D.C., this morning. "I think for most Americans, the top issue is what we're talking about here today, which is jobs and the economy; how to get this economy moving in a way that provides opportunity."

Asked about GOP reaction to same-sex marriage as a topic of political discussion, the Ohio Republican senator and former Romney VP short-lister described the party's reaction as "mixed."

"Mixed, and that's understandable," Portman said, when Allen asked him, of the GOP, "Do you think they sort of get it, or do you think there's a ways to go?"

Portman added: "After all, I had a different point of view until very recently. No, it's a mixed reaction. ? I'm sure there are other political impacts, but for me this was not a political decision."

Some in the party, and outside it, have worried that Republicans have taken a losing stand, politically, against same-sex marriage. At a panel hosted by the GOP gay-rights group GOProud at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland last month, strategists and conservative columnists openly fretted that the Republican Party deploys intolerant rhetoric and policies that will alienate a generation of new voters.

Portman became the only GOP senator to support gay marriage when he announced his backing March 15, revealing that his son is gay. That made Portman one of just three sitting Republican lawmakers to support gay marriage, along with Reps. Richard Hanna of New York and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida.

Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois the only other GOP senator who supports it.

Perhaps spurred by Portman, and by Supreme Court arguments on Prop. 8 and DOMA last month, a cascade of Senate Democrats have followed Portman's lead, as ABC News' Sunlen Miller has reported.

Polls reflect Portman's impression that the economy, deficits and health care rate as the top three issues of priority for Americans. On same-sex marriage, most side with Portman and against the rest of his party.

In the last ABC News-Washington Post poll, released March 18, 58 percent of respondents said they think gay marriage should be legal.

New study finds plant proteins control chronic disease in Toxoplasma infections

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

A new discovery about the malaria-related parasite Toxoplasma gondii -- which can threaten babies, AIDS patients, the elderly and others with weakened immune function -- may help solve the mystery of how this single-celled parasite establishes life-long infections in people.

The study, led by a University of South Florida research team, places the blame squarely on a family of proteins, known as AP2 factors, which evolved from the regulators of flowering in plants.

In findings published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers demonstrate AP2 factors are instrumental in flipping a developmental "switch" that transitions the parasite from a rapidly dividing form destructive to healthy tissue to a chronic stage invisible to the immune system. They identified one factor, AP2IX-9, that appears to restrict development of Toxoplasma cysts that settle quietly in various tissues, most commonly the host's brain.

A better understanding of how the switch mechanism works may eventually lead to ways to block chronic Toxoplasma infections, said study principal investigator Michael White, PhD, professor of global health and molecular medicine at USF Health and a member of the Center of Drug Discovery and Innovation, a Florida Center of Excellence at USF.

White and his colleagues are among the world's leading experts in T. gondii, combining approaches from biochemistry, genetics and structural biology to look for new ways to combat the parasitic disease toxoplasmosis.

No drugs or vaccines currently exist to treat or prevent the chronic stage of the disease. The T. gondii parasites may remain invisible to the immune system for years and then reactivate when immunity wanes, boosting the risk for recurrent disease.

"The evolutionary story of Toxoplasma is fascinating," White said. "We were blown away to find that the AP2 factors controlling how a flower develops and how plants respond to poor soil and water conditions have been adapted to work within an intracellular human parasite."

Ages ago the ancestors of malaria parasites genetically merged with an ancestor of plants, and the primitive plant donated its AP2 factors to the future malaria family.

"Our study showed that, like the AP2 factors help a plant survive a stressful environment, the AP2 factors of T. gondii help the parasite decide when the time is right to grow or when to form a tissue cyst that may lie dormant in people for many years," White said.

Toxoplasmosis, the infection caused T. gondii, is commonly associated with the medical advice that pregnant women should avoid contact with litter boxes. That's because infected cats play a big role in spreading the disease. The tiny organism thrives in the guts of cats, producing countless egg-like cells that are passed along in the feces and can live in warm moist soil or water for months.

People can acquire toxoplasmosis several ways, usually by exposure to the feces of cats or other infected animals, by eating undercooked meat of infected animals, or drinking water contaminated with T. gondii.

Up to 30 percent of the world's population is estimated to be infected with the T. gondii parasite. In some parts of the world, including places where sanitation is poor and eating raw or undercooked meat is customary, nearly 100 percent of people carry the parasite, White said.

Few experience flu-like symptoms because the immune system usually prevents the parasite from causing illness, but for those who are immune deficient the consequences can be severe.

The disease may be deadly in AIDS patients, organ transplant recipients, patients receiving certain types of chemotherapy, and infants born to mothers infected with the parasite during or shortly before pregnancy. Recently, toxoplasmosis has been linked to mental illness, such as schizophrenia and other diseases of dementia, and changes in behavior.

Because it is common, complex and not easily killed with standard disinfection measures, the toxoplasma parasite is a potential weapon for bioterrorists, White added.

Citi files claim with Nasdaq for compensation from Facebook IPO - sources

By John McCrank

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Citigroup has filed a claim with Nasdaq OMX Group to potentially receive compensation for losses associated with Facebook Inc's glitch-ridden market debut last May, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

Citi filed the claim on Monday, which is the deadline for applications from firms seeking to participate in the $62 million (40.6 million pounds) compensation plan, but is still looking at all of its options, including legal options, said one of the people. They did not have permission to speak with the media.

A spokeswoman for Citi had no comment, nor did a spokesman for Nasdaq.

The filing was reported by the Wall Street Journal earlier on Monday.

Citi's market-making arm lost around $20 million in the May 18 IPO, a source told Reuters in May. That is just a sliver of the upwards of $500 million that market-making firms - which facilitate trades, backing them with their own capital - and brokers lost in the $16 billion IPO.

UBS AG has pegged its losses from the problematic IPO at above $350 million. It said on March 25 it had already filed an arbitration demand against Nasdaq to fully recover losses due to the exchange's "gross mishandling the IPO."

Citi has been highly critical of Nasdaq's compensation plan as well, saying in a letter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in August that the exchange operator should be liable for hundreds of millions of dollars more.

Liabilities at U.S. exchanges, which have some regulatory duties, are capped when fulfilling those duties. Nasdaq's cap for technical glitches is $3 million a month in most instances.

But the New York-based exchange should be fully liable for all of the IPO losses, Citi argued, because it was operating in the capacity of a for-profit company during the IPO, and as such it should not have regulatory immunity.

Citi said in the letter Nasdaq made "grossly negligent business decisions that caused market participants hundreds of millions of dollars of losses."

Rogue trader Leeson gets Irish partnership as financial adviser

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Nick Leeson, the former rogue trader who brought down Britain's oldest investment bank, has a new job as a partner in an Irish firm advising borrowers struggling to make loan repayments.

Leeson, whose $1.4-billion loss as a Singapore-based junior derivatives trader led to the 1995 collapse of Barings Bank, has joined GDP Partners, the company said in a statement on Monday.

"His experience and background will add significant value to what we are trying to achieve on behalf of our clients," GDP Partners said in the statement.

The Dublin-based company assists borrowers with non-performing debts of more than 1 million euros ($1.3 million).

"There might be wry smiles from people when they think of me walking into a bank to negotiation on their behalf," Leeson, 46, told Irish national broadcaster RTE on Monday.

"(But) there is a certain degree of empathy with what people are facing. It's daunting when people are facing something they don't understand."

After spending three-and-a-half years in a Singapore jail, Leeson wrote a book called "Rogue Trader" which was later made into a film with Ewan McGregor in the title role.

Leeson has lived in Ireland for a decade, during which time he acted as chief executive at Irish soccer club Galway United.

Since he arrived the Irish economy has unraveled under the weight of a massive property bubble and the country's banks are struggling to deal with a mountain of bad debt.

Leeson will advise clients on new bankruptcy laws and a new non-judicial system of settling secured and unsecured debts of up to 3 million euros. ($1 = 0.7679 euros)

US, Russia vie for largest natural gas reserves

The United States, currently one of the world's largest sources of natural gas, may find itself fending off increasingly stiff competition in the resource's development, as the move to tap natural gas supplies goes global.

Considered by energy watchers to be one of the most promising avenues of energy development, natural gas is cleaner, more abundant and relatively less expensive than regular gas. The resource is being used in an ever-increasing array of activity, from generating electricity to powering locomotives and public transport ? which is putting upward pressure on market prices.

(Read more: Natural Gas Prices on the Rise, Challenging 'Cheap' Label)

Fewer regions have moved to harness natural gas as aggressively as the U.S., which accounts for more than a fifth of global natural gas consumption, according to data from the Worldwatch Institute, an environmental think-tank.

Still, global interest in the fossil fuel is on the rise as countries like Russia and Qatar move aggressively to tap their natural gas resources, with others like Israel following suit. The global interest poses a challenge to the U.S.'s growing clout in the sector.

(Read more: Israel to Invest in Navy to Protect Huge NatGas Fields)

In addition to international oil giants like Norway's Statoil and Chevron exploiting natural gas, Australia and countries in Africa and South America "are discovering gigantic fields all over the planet," said Richard Hastings, senior macro strategist at Global Hunter Securities. Development is "very robust and competitive," he added.

America's energy revolution has been in part hampered by a reluctance to ship its natural gas bounty to other countries. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Russia and the U.S. are running neck and neck for the title of the world's largest natural gas reserves.

Yet unlike the U.S. ? which is currently embroiled in a contentious debate about selling its natural gas stocks abroad ? other countries harbor little compunction about exporting the fuel to other resource-hungry nations.

Although the U.S. is one of the largest producers of natural gas, data from the CIA World Factbook lists the U.S as a distant challenger to natural gas export powerhouses like Russia, Qatar and Canada. Should the world's largest economy fail to sell more to other countries, analysts say it could put the U.S. at a disadvantage.

Global natural gas markets are highly competitive "except for captive markets like Russian sales to Europe," said John Felmy, chief economist of the American Petroleum Institute in Washington. "The U.S. being the largest producer of natural gas, it has the ability to be able to make some money off it."

The reluctance to export natural resources undercuts what analysts say is one of the U.S.'s major competitive advantages: generous mineral rights that make it relatively easy for companies and private citizens to drill with little interference from the government.

U.S. policy differs from other countries, where governments tightly control surface and mineral ownership, therefore restricting drilling and exploration. In Europe, a patchwork of European Union and local regulations are a barrier to natural gas exploitation.

"In terms of the development of the natural gas industry, what the U.S. policy make up does is allows the individual to benefit," said Matt Lucky, a sustainable energy fellow at Worldwatch Institute. That allows major energy companies and private landowners to exploit valuable mineral rights beneath their land, he said.

That distinction "has helped to drive exploration in the natural gas sector in the United States. A lot of people have become very wealthy in the U.S. by mineral rights," Lucky said. "That's not the case in in much of the rest of the world."

Mom: 'BUCKWILD' star a Christian, now in heaven

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? For all his on-camera carousing and cussing, "BUCKWILD" reality TV star Shain Gandee was a publicly proclaimed and baptized Christian, and his mother told hundreds of mourners Sunday that she will see him again.

"I know where Shain is," Loretta Gandee told the family, friends and fans crammed into the Charleston Municipal Auditorium. "He said about a month ago, 'I know when I die I'm going to heaven.'"

Dressed in a hot-pink "Gandee Candy" T-shirt and jeans, she spoke only a few words but bellowed out an unaccompanied hymn, her voice echoing through the auditorium in prayer for their reunion.

Gandee, his 48-year-old uncle, David Gandee, and 27-year-old friend Donald Robert Myers were found dead April 1 in a sport utility vehicle that was partially submerged in a deep mud pit near Sissonville. They had last been seen leaving a bar at 3 a.m.

Autopsies determined all three died of carbon monoxide poisoning, possibly caused by the tailpipe being submerged in mud. That could have allowed the invisible gas to fill the vehicle's cabin.

Shain Gandee, nicknamed "Gandee Candy" by fans, was a breakout star of the show that followed the antics of young friends enjoying their wild country lifestyle. Season one was filmed last year, mostly around Sissonville and Charleston.

The Rev. Randy Campbell told the many young people in the crowd he understands that life bombards them with difficult choices. But he urged them to follow Shain Gandee's lead and embrace their faith now, while they are energetic and engaged.

"This life will hand you a lot of things and call it pleasure, but there is nothing that brings greater joy to a person's heart than serving the Lord," Campbell said. "You may think at this point, you're having fun, but those days will pass."

When they do, he said, God is all that matters.

Cameras were not allowed at the funeral or private family burial in Thaxton Cemetery.

As hundreds filed past the two closed coffins on the auditorium stage, a slideshow of family photos showed the simple life that Shain Gandee lived long before TV cameras started following him.

Set to country music were snapshots of him as a uniformed pee wee football player, as a teenager in a tuxedo for prom, then graduating from high school in a black gown and mortarboard.

In other images, he kissed a bride and held babies. In several, he wore hunting camouflage, displaying a slain buck by its antlers and lining up a batch of gray squirrels on a bench.

Gandee favored four-wheelers, pickups and SUVs over cellphones and computers, and "mudding," or off-road driving, was one of his favorite pastimes.

It was no coincidence some mourners arrived in mud-splattered trucks.

Dreama and Charlie Frampton, who live a few doors down, said Gandee had been playing in the mud since he was 5.

"If it wasn't a four-wheel drive truck," Dreama said, "it was a four-wheeler or a dirt bike."

"He was dedicated to the sport," Charlie added. "That's all you can do out in the country."

Gandee's family asked mourners to wear camouflage or the neon-colored Gandee Candy T-shirts to the service because Shain didn't like to dress up.

Ricky Sater, 23, said his friend would have loved the sea of camo and T-shirts that filled the auditorium.

"He probably would walk in there going, 'BUCKWILD!'" he said.

Sater has known Shain since middle school and last saw him a week ago, when he came over to borrow a pin for a trailer hitch.

"He said, 'See ya, Rick!' and I said, 'See ya, drunk!" recalled Sater, who got the terrible news days later in a phone call.

"My sister told me about it, and it being April Fool's, I thought she was joking. But she wasn't," he said, swallowing hard. "I try to keep my emotions balled up, but I started breaking down about six hours later."

Shooting was underway on season two at the time of Gandee's death, but MTV spokesman Jake Urbanski said film crews were not with him over Easter weekend and hadn't filmed him since earlier that week.

MTV says it will be weeks before producers and cast members decide whether to continue. For now, the network said, everyone is focused on supporting Gandee's family.

Katrina Burdette, 25, of Cross Lanes, didn't know Gandee but is friends with his cast mate, Ashley Whitt. Burdette has watched every episode and wants to see more.

"I think it should go on. Give them time to mourn and everything, but he'd want the show to go on," she said. "He wanted to be in the show and keep it going, so why not ? in his memory ? keep it going?"

MTV said the half-hour series in the old "Jersey Shore" time slot was pulling in an average of 3 million viewers per episode since its premiere and was the No. 1 original cable series on Thursday nights among 12- to 34-year-olds.

Others, like his neighbors the Framptons, say the show just won't be the same.

"They should just leave well enough alone," Charlie Frampton said.

But he won't object if the show survives. It's bringing people to West Virginia, and he rejects the notion that it portrays the state in a negative light.

"They're just showing what true country is," he said. "It's no worse than that 'Teen Mom.'"

The most (and least) satisfied workers

Where you work can be an excellent predictor of your health, happiness and stress levels. A recent Gallup poll demonstrates the extent to which workers in different professions tend to have similar levels of overall well-being. According to the 2012 results of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, physicians had the highest level of well-being of any major profession, while transportation workers, including drivers, pilots, flight attendants and air traffic controllers had the lowest.

Gallup-Healthways asked more than 170,000 workers a series of 55 questions covering physical and emotional health, life evaluation and workplace environment. Gallup assigned a score between 0 to 100 to each of 14 major professional categories, with 100 representing ideal well-being. Based on Gallup's score, these are the most and least satisfied professions.

24/7 Wall St.: America's Most Content (and Miserable) Cities

While each of the 55 questions had some impact on the profession?s final well-being score, certain measures highly contribute to workers' health. These include such factors as getting regular exercise, not smoking, learning something new every day, and being treated well by their employers, to name a few.

In an interview with 24/7 Wall St., Dan Witters, research director for the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, explained that the professions with high levels of obesity and related conditions like heart attacks and chronic physical pain were more likely to have much lower overall well-being. Just 14 percent of physicians were considered obese, compared to the more than 37 percent of transportation workers.

The majority of health insurance coverage in the United States is provided by employers, resulting in some dramatic differences between professions. Virtually all physicians surveyed (97 percent) reported having health insurance, while just 77 percent of transportation workers could say the same. Witters explained that health insurance, besides making people more likely to receive treatment they need, ?has a lot of influence on the proactive nature of which people tend to their health.?

Conventional wisdom suggests that working long hours has long-term negative mental and physical health effects. In fact, Witters explained, the data do not support this. While working long hours can lead to stress, many of the jobs with the longest hours, including doctors, professionals such as lawyers and engineers, and business owners, have among the highest levels of well-being. One reason for this, Witters noted, is that long hours translate to higher income in these positions. Higher income, he explained, has a very high correlation with well-being, as it gives people access to basic needs.

One group that may surprise some with its high level of well-being is teachers, which ranked only behind physicians for well-being. ?Teachers are a lot higher than a lot of people would guess. They are good eaters, their obesity, while too high, is well below the national average, and they have good workplace well-being. They get to use their strengths a lot.?

24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 14 professional categories surveyed by the Gallup-Healthway?s Well-Being Index in 2012. On top of calculating an overall national level of well-being, the index also calculates the well-being for each profession, assigning scores from 0 to 100, with 100 representing ideal well-being. In generating the rank, Gallup combined six separate indices, measuring access to basic needs, healthy behavior, work environment, physical health, life evaluation and optimism, and emotional health. In addition to the index, we considered income data and job descriptions from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook.

24/7 Wall St.: The 10 Best Countries for Tourism

The most satisfied professions.

1. Physician

? Job types: Internist, obstetrician, anesthesiologist

? Well-being index score: 78.0

? Obesity: 86.0 percent

? Percent with health insurance: 96.7 percent

? Percent satisfied with job: 95.5 percent

Physicians ranked higher than every other profession due to top marks in life evaluation, healthy behaviors, emotional and physical health, as well as access to basic needs. Physicians were by far the most likely professionals to be described by Gallup as ?thriving." They were also less likely than any other workers to have felt sad or angry in the past day, and the most likely to have the energy needed to be productive. Physicians are often exceptionally well-paid. According to the Medical Group Management Association, primary care physicians earned a median annual compensation of more than $200,000, while for those with medical specialties the figure exceeded $350,000.

2. Teacher

? Job types: High school, special education teacher, teacher assistants

? Well-being index score: 73.6

? Obesity: 79.4 percent

? Percent with health insurance: 95.7 percent

? Percent satisfied with job: 91.1 percent

Teachers had higher self-evaluations of their lives than workers in every other occupation beside physicians. Nearly 70 percent of teachers qualifying as ?thriving? based on their current and expected future quality of life. Teachers were also the most likely workers to report they smiled or laughed, experienced enjoyment or experienced happiness within the past day. Teachers surveyed also regularly practiced healthy behaviors. More than 64 percent ate at least five servings of fruits and vegetables at least four days a week, second only to nurses, and just under 6 percent smoked, less than only physicians. According to the BLS, median pay for ?education, training and library occupations" was just over $45,000 in 2010 -- higher than the median for all occupations.

3. Business Owners

? Job types: Contractor, store owner, entrepreneur

? Well-being index score: 73.4

? Obesity: 79.5 percent

? Percent with health insurance: 77.6 percent

? Percent satisfied with job: 93.3 percent

Business owners are more likely than any other class of workers to rate their work environment highly. Over 93 percent of business owners said they were satisfied with their job or the work they did, higher than any occupation except for physician. Additionally, nearly 89 percent of business owners reported their work environment was trusting and open -- by far the highest of any type of worker. According to the BLS, as of February there were almost 14.5 million self-employed workers, down from nearly 15.9 million five years prior.

24/7 Wall St.: Companies Paying the Least in Taxes

The Least Satisfied Professions

1. Transportation

? Job types: Bus drivers, flight attendants, air traffic controllers

? Well-being index score: 63.3

? Obesity: 62.9 percent

? Percent with health insurance: 77.0 percent

? Percent satisfied with job: 84.8 percent

Just over 80 percent of transportation employees believe that they use their strengths at work, lower than any other occupation except for clerical workers. Many transportation jobs, such as bus drivers and cab drivers, pay low wages, possibly contributing to a lower sense of well-being. Other positions in the industry pay quite well. For instance, air traffic controllers had a median pay of $108,040 in 2010, a pretty good haul considering that the position only needs an associate?s degree. However, the position involves a high amount of stress due to the intense concentration necessary and the nights and weekends involved.

2. Manufacturing or Production

? Job types: Assembly line workers, bakers, machine workers

? Well-being index score: 64.3

? Obesity: 70.4 percent

? Percent with health insurance: 78.8 percent

? Percent satisfied with job: 83.4 percent

Manufacturing and production employees -- such as factory workers, food preparation workers, garment or furniture manufacturers -- had lower ratings of their work environments than nearly all other occupations. They were less likely to feel satisfied in their job and among the least likely to be satisfied with how their supervisor treated them. Many of these jobs are low wages jobs. The median annual salaries of bakers and food processors were $23,450 and $23,950, respectively in 2010. The median 2010 salaries of assemblers, metal and plastic machine workers, and printing workers were all below the national median for all occupations. Manufacturing and production employees also ranked as the nation?s worst for healthy behavior due to high rates of smoking and low rates of exercise.

3. Installation or Repair

? Job types: Mechanic, linesman, maintenance worker

? Well-being index score: 64.8

? Obesity: 70.7 percent

? Percent with health insurance: 75.9 percent

? Percent satisfied with job: 87.2 percent

Installation and repair workers, such as linesmen, mechanics, as well as maintenance and repair workers, were less likely to practice healthy behaviors. They were among the least likely employees to regularly eat fruits and vegetables, and among the most likely to smoke. Additionally, these workers also provided lower self-evaluations of their current lives than all occupations except for transportation workers. Many of these positions require no more than a high school diploma alongside moderate or long-term on-the-job training and do not pay considerably more than the median pay of $33,840 for all occupations.

iMore Editors' Choice: Badland, Soundcloud, Veronica Mars, and more

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include an app that lets you check the coverage of major US carriers, a refreshing runner game, a music app, a TV show, an app for a popular auctioning service, and an app that lets you bookmark your favorite locations.

Coverage? - Joseph Keller

Whether I'm planning a road trip or writing an article about a carrier for iMore, Coverage tells me where the four major carriers have their various networks deployed, from 2G to LTE. Currently, Coverage provides data on a carrier's roaming areas and its 2G, 3G, "4G", and LTE networks. If you want to look at just one or two networks, you can turn their filters on and off in the top right-hand corner.Coverage uses the reports of each carrier, and it's proven reliable enough for me to count on its information. The only real downside of Coverage is its need for an app update to become current after a network turns on towers in more cities. It's a universal app that costs $2.99, so pick it up if you want this sort of information on hand wherever you go.

Badland - Simon Sage

Badland is a refreshing new runner game that does away with the idea that you have to be out of the game as soon as you hit anything. In Badland, you control this odd little creature trying to flap its way through a treacherous forest. Debris falls in your path, and odd machinery peaks through the brush and occasionally knocks you around, but the really interesting part are the power ups you pick up. Some types make you smaller, and able to fit through tiny crevices, while others make you larger and massive enough to push aside obstacles. You can play local multiplayer and try to nudge opponents off the edge of the screen, which moves gradually forward as you progress. What really got me about Badland is the altogether polished art style. It's certainly dark, but a little whimsical too. Definitely check this one out if you're looking for something visually refreshing.

Soundcloud - Chris Parsons

These days, I find myself listening to all sorts of different music. One reason for that is the fact I not too long ago signed up for a Soundcloud account. Rather then listening to the same music over and over, I now just let Soundcloud play on in the background let it pick some music for me. Then, we I hear some stuff I like, I favorite it. My use case is fairly slim in comparison to what Soundcloud is capable of as a whole, but if you're looking to check some new music or even podcasts then it's certainly worth a look. From indie bands to top acts, you'll find them all offering free content on Soundcloud and best of all, the app itself is free.

Veronica Mars Rene Ritchie

Veronica Mars was a post-Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series that used a similar formula -- small, young, precocious, blond, snarky, lady hero raised in a single family home positively cleaning the clocks of big bad forces all around her. The setting wasn't super natural, but the stories smart, the characters well rendered, and the mix of humor, hope, pain, rage, suspense, and triumph remarkably well balanced and well executed.

Series creator Rob Thomas is currently using Kick Starter to fund a movie spin off. I backed it within moments of it going live and it's now at somewhere around $4.5 million. More money will mean a better movie, however, so if you haven't backed it yet, check it out.

The original three seasons are available on iTunes. They're all good, the first is spectacular.

eBay - Ally Kazmucha

We did some spring cleaning around The Pod Drop office and found lots of old iPhones, iPads, damaged logic boards, and pretty much everything you could imagine. To get rid of all this stuff, we frequently use eBay. I'd never really managed eBay auctions from the native iPhone and iPad app but decided to give it a try. I have to say I'm actually pretty impressed.

If you're selling items or bidding on other items, you'll get notifications pushed directly to your iPhone or iPad if you're outbid or when someone places another bid on one of your items. You can literally do almost everything you can on the web based version of eBay through the mobile apps. It's a huge time saver for answering buyer questions on the go. If you use eBay quite often and own an iPhone or iPad, it's hugely convenient.

Rego - Leanna Lofte

Rego is an iPhone app that lets you bookmark your favorite locations. For each locations you can attached photos and notes to remember why it is that you like that location. As a photographer, I'm using Rego as a way to save great photo shoot locations and make notes about lighting, specific areas of the locations, and other helpful details. Rego lets you save up to 10 locations for free and an unlimited amount for $0.99.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Breanna Stewart had all the answers to help UConn finally vanquish Notre Dame.

The stellar freshman scored a career-high 29 points to go with four blocks and was seemingly everywhere in leading the Huskies back to the national championship game with an 83-65 win over Notre Dame on Sunday night.

The Huskies will face Louisville in the title game Tuesday night, and it will be an all-Big East affair after the Cardinals rallied to beat California 64-57 in the other semifinal. UConn will be going for its eighth national championship to match Tennessee for the most in women's basketball history.

No team has dominated Geno Auriemma's Huskies the way that the Irish had over the past few seasons. UConn (34-4) had lost the previous two national semifinals to the Irish and dropped three thrilling games this season to their rival.

Stewart and her teammates wouldn't let it happen again, ending the brilliant career of Notre Dame guard Skylar Diggins. She finished her last college game with 10 points, going a dismal 3 for 15 from the field.

"Once you get here you're only going to beat great teams. And the reason Notre Dame has beaten us seven of the last eight times is because they're really, really good," Auriemma said. "For one night, that's what's great about the NCAA tournament, for one night, for just this night, we just needed to be better than them, and we were."

The Huskies built a 10-point halftime lead playing incredible defense and Notre Dame (35-2) could only get within six in the second half as its school record 30-game winning streak came to an end.

The Huskies and Irish have developed the best rivalry in women's basketball over the past few seasons, and this game might have been the final chapter between the two with Notre Dame headed to the Atlantic Coast Conference next season.

Two years ago, the Huskies won the first three meetings before Notre Dame shocked them in the national semifinals. Notre Dame had won seven of the previous eight meetings before Sunday night and this one, for once, started slowly. With the teams so familiar with each other, getting easy baskets was virtually impossible. Notre Dame went nearly 7? minutes without a field goal missing 14 consecutive shots.

While UConn would usually knockout most opponents during a scoreless stretch like that, the Huskies couldn't take advantage against the Irish scoring only four points themselves.

Neither team led by more than four points for the first 16 minutes. But trailing 26-25 with 3:44 left in the half, UConn took over. Bria Hartley, who has struggled all season while recovering from an ankle injury she suffered over the summer, was the spark. The junior guard started the spurt with a 3-pointer and added a nifty pullup moments later to make it 32-26.

After Notre Dame scored to pull within four, Morgan Tuck put back a miss and Stewart hit a 3-pointer. A Kelly Faris layup with 3.9 seconds left capped the burst and made it 39-29 at the break.

Diggins was 0 for 6 from the field in the first half as the Huskies harassed her all over the court. She scored the Irish's first two points on free throws and didn't have another point until getting a steal early in the second half and converting it for the easy layup to make it 42-35. The two-time All-American tried to do everything she could to rally her team. Twice she chased down Hartley on the break to block her shot.

UConn led 50-43 with 12:22 left before Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Stewart hit back-to-back 3s to give the Huskies their biggest lead of the game.

Notre Dame wasn't done, their star freshman Jewell Loyd scoring five points during a 9-2 run to get the Irish within 61-55.

That was as close as they could get as Stewart and UConn scored the next seven points to seal the victory. Stewart was the most heralded freshman coming into the season, but struggled through the middle part of the year. But ever since the Big East tournament she's really been on a roll.

"Every player, especially young players, deal with things differently," Auriemma said. "And I think when the season ended, it just let the air out of the balloon and she said, 'Now I just want to play basketball.' My God, she was amazing tonight."

The 6-foot-4 budding star had 16 points in the loss to the Irish for the conference title and earned most outstanding player of the Bridgeport regional.

The loss ended an incredible season for Notre Dame and left Diggins without a national championship. The star guard had accomplished nearly everything else in her stellar career at the school, including helping her Irish turn around their rivalry against the Huskies.

Diggins said she spoke with Auriemma after the loss.

"Don't let this define my career," she said he told her, and that: "I've done more for women's basketball than some people have done who have won four championships."

"He just told me I was a good player," she said. "You respect that coming from such a good coach."

Notre Dame won a school record 30 straight games with the only other loss coming against Baylor in early December. The Irish won their second straight Big East regular season title and first conference tournament championship. But only Oral Roberts since 1999-2000 has beaten an opponent four times in a season (UMKC), according to STATS LCC.

Lawmaker: Iran will never halt nuclear program

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? A top Iranian lawmaker declared Sunday that Iran will never halt its nuclear development program, a day after the latest round of international talks failed to reach agreement on the issue.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi said the talks were "considered effective and a step forward," but he added, "the Islamic Republic of Iran will never stop uranium enrichment activities."

Boroujerdi, who heads a parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy, said the talks should continue. He was quoted by the ISNA news agency.

Western powers are concerned that Iran may move toward production of nuclear weapons. Iran denies that, insisting that its program is peaceful.

World powers have repeatedly demanded that Iran close down its Fordo underground uranium enrichment plant that is enriching uranium up to 20 percent. Uranium that is enriched to 90 percent can be used in weapons.

The U.N. has enacted four rounds of economic sanctions against Iran to try to force it to curtail its program, but Iran has remained defiant.

"If one day the (Iranian) administration decides to close down Fordo, the parliament will oppose the decision, definitely," Boroujerdi was quoted as saying. He said Iran will continue reinforcing the plant because of foreign threats. Both the U.S. and Israel have hinted at military action against Iran's nuclear facilities if diplomacy fails.

Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed the West for failure at the weekend talks in Almaty, Kazakhstan. "The talks showed that the West is not honest in its remarks," he told reporters.

He said Western powers cannot achieve progress "if they do not acknowledge Iran's natural rights" to enrich uranium.

Velayati is seen a leading candidate for June elections to pick a successor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The comments were the first by top Iranian officials after the talks Friday and Saturday between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany.
