A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Book Review (Part 2 ...

The two books recommended in the last post (The Power of Habit and Rip It Up) make great sense and point us toward methods for cutting through to better results faster with less stress and struggle. But they aren?t really about new ideas. So why do we need a continuing stream of such works when the concepts are pretty straight forward and could be applied by any individual or organization? Reading these two books took me back to re-read one that made a vast difference in my life at 17 and after: Psycho-Cybernetics by Matthew Maltz, often thought of as one of the earliest forerunners of today?s flood of self-help. It remains different from other early works that might fit in the genre. As today many of those focused more on selling or getting rich ? Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, leading toward the now-famous Canadian Brian Tracy who?s created his very own flood of similar books all repeating much the same advice that would help with any habit you need to build. Essentially they all call for ?positive thinking? ? visualizing as clearly as possible what you want, then working steadily to turn the visions into dependable behaviors you need to achieve those things. Echoing in the back of my mind are all the psych studies showing that, of the The Big Five personality traits that psychologists now seem to agree are fundamental, the one most likely to ensure success at work is Conscientiousness, which I translate as ?habits.? To the extent you turn behavior into habit, to that same extent you can depend on it to repeat consistently and conscientiously in every situation. This was even echoed by a former British submarine officer who taught public speaking ? saying that what they looked for in Navy officers above all else was consistency. In his view, the worst officers were simply those whose sailors couldn?t depend from minute to minute on being treated the same way. They didn?t command by habit. One book title led to another on Amazon and Google and all point at the same principles. On any book?s page you can see a list that Amazon finds people often ?buy with? the one you?re looking at ? typically a list of 15 pages of items, 7 to a page, making at least 105 similar works that ?self-help? fiends habitually look to as the next purchase. These represent even older as well as much newer books of the type, so you can be sure the list could go a great deal longer than 100. When I happened to read a biography of an early essayist that I?d also read in my teens, Montaigne, it reminded me he also built much of his advice on the principle of habits ? writing around the year 1570. So there is just one question. Why are we still not teaching this stuff in formal classes in every sort of program in the land? We continue to put leaders in place to whom these concepts are apparently unknown and we continue to raise generations who have to find them out in the most whacky forms by stumbling across nutty fads or casual reading instead of more scientifically justified and clearly scientifically explained principles. Since effective business seems to be our only serious potential salvation since it alone could make war, starvation and poverty unnecessary, why aren?t the key principles that make us effective at it universally taught in a business-like way. Duhigg manages something closer to that than most, but still at times sounds in realm of trying to convince us to try ?new? or dubious ideas. Bookmark and share this post More??

Is there a way to upload music to Google Play without a PC?

  • I have alot of music on my X and was wondering if there is a way to upload music to Google play without using my laptop. my home network connection is so poor that if anyone uploads anything even photos, it will slow the computer down. If I download or upload anything, it has to be done over 3G. Thanks

  • I don't believe so. But you can tether through your phone to use 3G network. But you will go through your 5gb soft limit in a heart beat in doing this. Making you a heavy 3G user. Then you will be the last of the list in getting speeder data connection (Basically slowing down your connection for that month). Best to do this through your wired connection. Just upload overnight through your wired connection from your computer. I know this is slow, but using your wired connection won't eat up your soft 3G limit. And you got all night to do this.
I personally feel that until we truly get unlimited data service w/o throttling us, this kind of cloud services is not practical. Every time you play music through streaming that you store in the cloud, work on your documents on the cloud, or anything you do in the cloud it eats at your data usage. 5gb soft limit on the unlimited plan is not much when you do things in the cloud. So beware that you maybe slowed down for a period of time if you upload, download and/or stream from the cloud.
What I do is keep a small collection of music that I want to listen to on the Android device. So I don't have to download or stream the music.
Always keep a copy of what is on your Device on your computer and on separate media. What I do is put my Micro SD card in a reader and copy all stuff on the card into a folder in my computer. Then make a backup of the data in two separate external drives (one I take with me at work and one that stays at home. That way I have the Micro SD card as a copy, a copy in the computer, a copy in an external drive at home, and a copy off site in a external drive. That is four copies. Online cloud is the fifth backup, but time consuming and sometimes costly on bandwidth to you.
PS - Micro SD cards do fail w/o any warning. Just an caution FYI.

  • I was told that Verizon can't take away your unlimited data completly if you don't renew your contract. My friend who works there told me that it's illegal because you pay for, unlimited data and its, like stealing if they take away your unlimited

  • They don't really charge you if you use more than 5 gigs if you're on an unlimited data plan, do they?

Sent from my DROIDX using Droid X Forums

  • They are not going to hit you with charges. So that is not the issue.
It is that they will put you in the last of the list for the speeder data service. The more congested the networks get the slower you get, because you will be on the last of the list to be served. Basically you, as a heavy user, will be slowed down (throttled) in order to give others on 3G fair usage, because you are using abnormal usage and causing network congestion. This causing interference with their network or ability to provide quality service to other users is their reasoning. Basically putting you to square one with the same slow speed issue that you have with your wired Internet services.

Remind bosses: No comments about ethnicity ? Business ...

There are some things supervisors just shouldn?t say even in jest?including anything concerning race, national origin or any other protected characteristic. Comments on those topics regularly come back to haunt employers when employees file discrimination lawsuits.

Recent case: Vicente, who was born in Honduras and whose parents were from Honduras and Spain, sold telecom equipment for T-Mobile USA. He exceeded his sales quotas, received good reviews and was praised as a high-performing salesman.

His supervisor, however, had a penchant for criticism. He was overheard calling Vicente a ?hot-headed Latino? and a ?beaner,? a slang term for Hispanics of Mexican heritage. The supervisor also referred to himself and Vicente as ?Shrek and Donkey,? an apparent allusion to the popular cartoon characters.

On another occasion, the supervisor told Vicente that his emails had a ?flowery European writing style? and that he should ?write like an American.?

Vicente later testified that he tolerated the behavior because he didn?t want to ?come across as a whiner.? He said he felt compelled to project a personality consistent with what he had been taught in sales training?as someone ?comfortable and very easy to be around.?

Vicente was fired after, at another supervisor?s urging, submitting an order from a customer who had not yet signed the contract. A non-Hispanic co-worker also participated in the deal. The supervisor and Vicente were terminated for breaking company rules on order submissions, while the white co-worker was not.

Vicente sued, and the court held that his lawsuit could go forward based on discriminatory firing. The court said the comments Vicente endured were potential evidence that the supervisor who recommended termination may have been motivated by discrimination against Hispanics. (Piedi v. T-Mobile USA, No. 3:11-Cv-180, WD NC, 2012)

WATCHING OUT FOR INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - The Seminole ...

    AE_international music_Brittany

Many artists from other countries have brought their music to the US.

    Faith Frith, Staff Reporter

International music is taking over America by storm. All around the country people are listening to famous artists from their other country and various locations. Artists worldwide are making their marks on other cultures and are often recognized for their talents

K-pop, the pop music of South Korea, incorporates dance, repetitive lyrics, and upbeat music. It?s also one of several genres of music that?s spreading like wildfire. K-pop has already been recognized by many people, from South and North America to Europe, and various countries in Asia. The trend for these catchy songs blew up when the song ?Gangnam Style? was created by Korean artist PSY. It?s been on Billboard?s Top 100 for at least five weeks.

Reflecting on the ?Gangnam Style? by PSY, freshman Aditya Lellapalli said, ?Yes, I have heard and saw the video for ?Gangnam Style.? I think it?s one of the best songs I [have] ever heard because it makes no sense and we don?t know what he [is] saying.?

Well-known K-pop groups like The Wonder Girls, Girls Generation, Kara, Super Junior, SHINee, and E-XO among others have found success outside of South Korea.

The UK is making its comeback with artists like Cher Lloyd, The Wanted, Alex Clare, Mumford & Sons, Adele, The Script, Coldplay, Ellie Goulding, One Direction, and Ed Sheeran. Most British artists are played on the pop stations seeing as they have up-tempo beats and catchy lyrics like ??my universe will never be the same, I?m glad you came,? from The Wanted?s song ?Glad You Came?.

Cher Lloyd?s pop hit ?Want U Back? spent seventeen weeks on Billboard?s Top 100. Alex Clare?s song ?Too Close? has been on it for twenty-eight weeks. Mumford & Sons has been on the charts for nine weeks with their song ?I Will Wait.? Ellie Goulding?s song ?Lights? has been on the Top 100 for forty-two weeks. Ed Sheeran?s song ?The A Team? has 13 weeks.

David Guetta, famous for his fresh beats, is originally from France. So don?t be surprised when a song with his music comes on. Well-known songs that include his musical talents include ?Titanium? sung by Sia, ?Turn Me On? sung by Nicki Minaj, and ?Without You? sung by Usher. ?Titanium? has stayed on Billboard?s Top 100 for twenty-six weeks.

Students wonder what makes non-American artists thrive so well in the U.S. According to sophomore Katie-Starr Harrel, ??certain international songs go viral in the U.S. more so than in their original countries because Americans are crazy partiers who enjoy a good tune.?

Not all students favor foreign artists over American artists. Sophomore Malcolm Lei prefers, ?American [because] they have country and 3 Doors Down.?

Whether they?re appealing or not, international artists are out there and are making their way into the U.S.
