Visa beats predictions, helped by emerging markets

NEW YORK (AP) ? Visa beat Wall Street's expectations for the latest quarter as it sought out business overseas.

The payments processing company made $1.7 billion for the fiscal fourth quarter, which covered July through September, or $2.47 per share. That was nearly double the $880 million, or $1.27, that it made in the same period a year ago.

After adjusting for one-time items, earnings were $1.54. That beat the predictions of analysts polled by FactSet, who had expected $1.50.

Revenue was $2.73 billion for the quarter, up 15 percent. That was also better than the $2.68 billion that analysts had predicted.

Visa, which is based in Foster City, Calif., makes money by processing card transactions. Its results provide insight into how consumers are spending.

Revenue from data processing, international transactions and service were all up. Volume for all credit and debit use grew the most in Asia Pacific and the area covering Central Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It was only slightly higher in the U.S.

Visa has been focusing its sights on international expansion, especially in emerging market countries where the percentage of credit and debit card usage is very low. Earlier Wednesday, rival MasterCard also reported higher profit and revenue, fueled by the overseas business.

Unlike the banking industry, Visa wasn't cutting back on expenses. The company spent more on personnel, marketing, administration and other professional services.

For the full year, Visa earned $2.1 billion, down 41 percent from a year ago. Earnings were hurt in the fiscal third quarter because Visa and other credit card processors had to set aside money to settle a longstanding class-action lawsuit brought by retailers.

MasterCard, Visa and major banks have agreed to pay retailers $7.25 billion after the retailers accused them of fixing the fees that retailers have to pay whenever customers use credit cards. Despite pushback from some large retailers, the deal is expected to gain court approval in the coming months.

Revenue for the full year was $10.4 billion, up 13 percent over the year.

Visa's stock rose about 1.5 percent in after-hours trading, up $2.15 to $140.91.

Pandora falls on report that Apple in talks for Internet radio

(Reuters) ? Shares of online streaming music service Pandora Media closed down 12 percent on a report that Apple Inc was in serious talks with major music labels to start an advertising-supported internet radio service by early next year.

A deal could be reached by mid-November with Apple starting a service within the first three months of 2013, Bloomberg said, quoting people with knowledge of the negotiations.

News last month that Apple could be considering a potential launch of an online streaming music service cast a shadow over Pandora?s business prospects. The company?s shares have dropped more than 40 percent since then.

Pandora faces fierce competition from the likes of Sirius XM Radio, Clear Channel and Spotify as they battle for listeners in the burgeoning online streaming radio market, but Apple ? with its huge purse and ties to music labels ? may be Pandora?s most serious challenger yet.

Executives from Vivendi SA?s Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group Corp, and Sony Corp?s music division visited Apple?s headquarters recently to learn more about its radio plans, Bloomberg said.

Apple wants listeners to be able to buy tracks as music streams or revisit what they?ve heard in auto-generated playlists, it reported.

?We don?t comment on our stock price or rumored competitive moves,? Eric Brown, Pandora?s vice-president of communications wrote in an email.

?We remain focused on our listeners and delivering the best Internet radio experience for them,? he added.

Apple was not immediately available for comment.

Shares of Pandora closed at $8.20 on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday. They were down 13 percent at $8.08 in trading after the bell.

Good reads: a 'hidden' nuclear crisis, how China sees the US, and 'Chilecon Valley'

This week's long-form good reads may change your perspective on which country is rolling out the welcome mat for foreign entrepreneurs, the 'end' of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and how China views the US.

By Allison Terry,?Correspondent / October 19, 2012

The world thought that the Cuban missile crisis ended in October 1962 when the United States lifted its quarantine around Cuba and the Soviet Union withdrew its medium-range missiles. However, ?the secret crisis still simmered? through November, writes Svetlana Savranskaya in Foreign Policy?. Unknown to American intelligence, the Soviets had also delivered almost 100 tactical weapons including 80 nuclear front cruise missiles, 12 nuclear warheads for dual-use Luna short-range rockets, and 6 nuclear bombs for IL-28 bombers.

?Even with the pullout of the strategic missiles, the tacticals would stay, and Soviet documentation reveals the intention of training the Cubans to use them,? writes Ms. Savranskaya, a senior fellow at the National Security Archive.

Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Anastas Mikoyan was tasked with handling the delicate negotiations with Cuba and an angry Fidel Castro, who found out about the US-Soviet agreement on the radio. Savranskaya includes a transcript from the Nov. 22, 1962, meeting between Mr. Castro and Mr. Mikoyan in which Castro expresses his humiliation: ? ?What do you think we are? A zero on the left, a dirty rag. We tried to help the Soviet Union to get out of a difficult situation.?

?In desperation, Castro almost begged Mikoyan to leave the tactical warheads in Cuba, especially because the Americans were not aware of them...,? Savranskaya writes. ?But Mikoyan rejected Castro?s pleas and cited a (nonexistent) Soviet law proscribing the transfer of nuclear weapons to third countries.

Castro had a suggestion: ?So you have a law that prohibits transfer of tactical nuclear weapons to other countries? It?s a pity. And when are you going to repeal that law?? Mikoyan was non-committal: ?We will see. It is our right [to do so].??

Understanding China?s perspective

China?s economic, cultural, and security goals do not need to be at odds with those of the West. When US policymakers understand how Beijing policymakers perceive US words and actions, a more polite and positive relationship could result.

In their essay ?How China Sees America,? Foreign Affairs writers Andrew J. Nathan and Andrew Scobell examine the perspectives of Chinese analysts and political strategists in order to understand how China perceives US actions and promises. The US, according to Beijing, is omnipresent in both its internal and external affairs, bullying it on cultural issues, trade agreements, and security issues. Chinese analysts also see the US through the Marxist political thought, ?which posits that capitalist powers seek to exploit the rest of the world,? they write.

Smithsonian launches marine effort with $10M gift

(AP) ? The Smithsonian is launching a new initiative to study coastal waters and create the first global network monitoring climate change and human impacts on ocean life with a $10 million gift.

Los Angeles hedge fund manager Michael Tennenbaum is announcing the donation Thursday. He says long-term data is needed to raise the level of dialogue about climate change and biodiversity.

The project will begin with five marine observatories, studying plants and animals in the Chesapeake Bay, Fort Pierce, Fla., and sites in Belize and Panama. The Smithsonian plans to add 10 more stations within a decade, using federal money, partners and fundraising.

Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough says coastal ecosystems are highly affected by humans. He says the Smithsonian will foster long-term study, while universities and others depend on short-term grants.

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) ? The man suspected of calmly walking into a service at an Atlanta-area megachurch and gunning down a church volunteer leading a prayer was committed eight years ago to a psychiatric hospital after a violent incident in Maryland, court records show.

Police in Georgia said former church worker Floyd Palmer, 51, entered a chapel at World Changers Church International just before 10 a.m. Wednesday and opened fire, killing church volunteer Greg McDowell, 39.

"He walked in calmly, opened fire, and left as calmly," Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester said.

Palmer was a former facilities maintenance employee at the church who resigned in August for "personal reasons," Lester said.

The church's well-known founder and leader, the Rev. Creflo Dollar, was not there at the time.

Palmer was taken into custody without incident a few hours later at a Macy's at a mall in Atlanta's upscale Buckhead neighborhood, Lester said. Police spotted his black Subaru station wagon with tinted windows in the parking lot of Lenox Square. They didn't recover a weapon.

Lester said Thursday that police searched Palmer's home overnight in Riverdale, south of Atlanta. She didn't have details on what was found.

Palmer faces murder and other charges, according to online jail records. An initial court appearance for Palmer was set for Thursday morning. At the hearing, Palmer would have the opportunity to ask for bond, Fulton County sheriff's spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said.

Court records show a man named Floyd Lester Palmer, born on the same day in 1960, was charged in Baltimore in 2001 with attempted murder, assault and handgun charges. He was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2004 after pleading not criminally responsible to lesser charges. The records show he was released the next year subject to conditions that were to remain in effect for five years.

The court filings include motions by the defense for a dangerousness evaluation, which was later withdrawn.

Details of what led to the charges weren't immediately known. Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the department did not have arrest records in the case, which is not unusual in cases where someone has been committed. Palmer's attorney in the case, Kenneth Ravenell, was out of the country on Wednesday, his staff said.

About 20 to 25 people were gathered in the chapel when the shooting happened. No other people were wounded and the gunman fled.

Investigators were working to determine if Palmer and McDowell knew each other.

"We do not know if the victim was targeted," Lester said. "We are looking into that as he was the only person that was shot."

Ken Terry, a pastor at the church who is acting as a spokesman for McDowell's family, said the church family was distraught and trying to comfort McDowell's family.

"He would be considered a model dad," Terry told reporters. "To have this happen is just devastating."

Although the campus has security officers and surveillance cameras, Lester said the suspect was known to some at the service, so his presence wouldn't have been unusual.

The violence upset members and neighbors of the church, which is one of the largest in the United States, claiming 30,000 members at the main campus and a ministry of satellite churches across the country.

Along with Bishop Eddie Long, Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches.

Dollar didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press, but he preached Wednesday evening at a Bible study in the campus's larger World Dome sanctuary. He repeated the importance of having faith in God even when bad things happen and rejecting fear and doubt.

"We pray for this family," he said, referring to McDowell. "We pray for both families and then we pray for every family that's in here tonight."

Earlier Wednesday, several church members walked over to the scene after hearing about the shooting.

"It doesn't surprise me," said Adolph Hanley, 66, of College Park. "People don't want the real Word."

He said of the fatal shooting: "That's the devil's work."

"Why would anyone want to hurt the church?" he asked.

Albert Henry, 55, of Riverdale, said his 5-year-old son was in day care near the chapel when the shooting took place. He said staffers called and told him to pick up the child.

"I can't believe someone just did it in the House of the Lord," said Henry, as his boy sat in the back seat.

Linda Pritchett, 43, a church member for 10 years, said the shooting didn't make her feel less secure attending services. She said people cannot give in to fear. But she said she grieved for the victim and his family.

"When something happens to one of us, it hurts all of us," she said.

Brett Simpson and Kai Otton survive the challenging Round 2 - Bettor

Brett Simpson and Kai Otton survive the challenging Round 2 conditions at Rip Curl Pro Portugal

America?s Brett Simpson and Australia?s Kai Otton may not have gotten to the best of starts at Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the eighth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which went down in Peniche, Portugal, but they had no intention of letting the early hiccup bring their hopes down.

Determined to redeem themselves after an early stumble, both the surfers managed to bounce back in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at Supertubos on Sunday, October 14, bringing the event to a premature end for Australia?s Matt Wilkinson and Australia?s Adam Melling respectively in the process.

The demanding two-to-three foot waves on offer at the primary event site were in no mood to show any mercy to the elite ASP surfers that were competing for not only honour, but also to secure their place in next year?s fight for the coveted ASP World Title.

The ninth heat of Round 2 pitted Simpson against Wilkinson in a one-on-one battle for the Round 3 spot.

Both the surfers had stumbled in their Round 1 heat and thus found themselves under immense pressure.

It contest between the two determined and at the same time desperate surfers turned out to be a real nail-biting affair, but as the dust settled, Simpson stood victorious with a heat-total of 12.50 points against Wilkinson?s two-wave total of 11.40 points.

The 10th heat saw Otton barely get the better of Melling to make it through into the next round.

The Australian compatriots went hard at each other despite the challenging conditions, with Melling eventually getting into a more favourable position with a heat-total of 8.00 points.

However, Otton got his hands on a juicy left-hander to eventually get to a heat-total of 11.67 points, which secured the fate of the battle in his favour.

?I was actually really lucky to get that good left,? Otton said. ?I made a paddling mistake and I couldn?t catch the wave ? maybe I?m too old. I don?t know, but I missed it and gave up priority and Adam (Melling) actually got a nice righthander straight after. I was just lucky enough that my left was behind that, otherwise he would have had the heat.?

Otton was to take on another of his fellow countryperson Owen Wright in Round 3 of Rip Curl Pro Portugal.

Moaning Penny likely to cause an upset in Bookmakers Stayers

Moaning Penny has got a great chance of causing an upset in the Bookmakers Stayers at Henlow in England on Thursday, October 25, 2012. She will be up against some quality greyhounds and will have to be at her absolute best in order to claim a cash prize of ?175 from the Grade OR contest.

Stamina will be the key in the 692 metres event, which is scheduled to kick off at 22:18 GMT. The starting positions will not be much important, as the greyhounds will be looking to push hard towards the ending moments of the race rather than the start.

Hey Kiddo and Westmead Diva are the ones, who have been rated as the favourites for this race. They have been performing well in recent times, thus the bookmakers believe that they will give a tough time to each other in the end.

However, things will not be easy for both of these greyhounds, as the level of competitiveness is too high. The former of the two was victorious in his penultimate outing, but failed to make a strong impression last time around. He is a touch inconsistent and will have to display some solid skills in order to finish ahead of his rivals.

On the other hand, Westmead Diva has been unable to meet the expectations of her team for the past couple of events and things will be extremely difficult for her in the end. She will be under immense pressure right now, but has the ability to cope up with it.

The N. Savva?s trained bitch was given pretty decent odds in her most recent outing, but had to settle for fourth place in the end. She will need to make a big improvement in order to break the shackles at Henlow.

Coming back to Moaning Penny, she will be full of confidence and the punters should not hesitate while risking bets in her favour. She was rated as one of the joint favourites to succeed in her most recent Grade OR outing and did not disappoint her team in the end.

The D. Whitton?s trainee secured the top spot by a comfortable margin of two lengths and a similar run will put her on top of the table once again.

HMV bans open-toe shoes and extreme body art - AOL Money UK

HMV storeAnna Gowthorpe/PA Wire

Troubled HMV has hit the headlines again - this time for its staff dress policy. The store has told staff they can't wear open-toed sandals, or have 'extreme' body art on display. So will we see an end to the days when record shop workers are expected to be a bit alternative? And can the store stop people from expressing themselves?

Or will this be the latest in a long line of woes for the music retailer?

New rules

The announcement is part of a new 'appearance policy' reported by the Daily Telegraph, which comes into effect on Friday. It requires that men wear blue denim jeans and women blue denim skirts. Both genders will be banned from flip flops and other open-toed shoes; and 'extreme' body art will have to be covered up - only discrete tattoos and piercings will be allowed.

There has been a shocked reaction from a public that is used to seeing some outlandish dress in record shops. However, James Hall, an associate in the employment and pensions team at lawyers Charles Russell told AOL Money that the shop is perfectly within its rights to set a dress code.

He explains: "There is concern from a lot of retailers that their staff ought to look approachable."

He accepts that the image of record shop staff may be more alternative than in many stores, but adds: "Asking them to cover up all tattoos would perhaps be a bit extreme, but they are not doing this, they are talking about extreme body art. They may be a music shop, but they have a classical section, and they have elderly customers, who they want to ensure are comfortable asking for help." He said that the shop has a right to insist that staff are dressed acceptably, look approachable and portray the right corporate image.

An HMV spokesman told the newspaper that this is exactly what the policy aimed to do: "More discreet tattoos and piercings are not an issue so long as people look smart. It goes without saying that we want our work colleagues to feel valued as individuals who can express their personalities, but it's also important that we balance this against the needs and expectations of our customers, who, ultimately, have to be at the heart of everything we do," he said.

Warning

Hall warned, however, that the store needed to take care to enforce the policy sensibly, to avoid falling foul of claims for discrimination. He said: "The key thing is that the policy has to be enforced consistently. Everyone's tattoos are different, and I don't think a tribunal would expect an employer to have something like a rule about a maximum surface area covered by tattoos. However, there has to be a clear structure behind the decisions, they need to be taken at a management level, and the individuals making them need to have training for how to handle them."

It remains to be seen how the policy is enforced, and whether it turns out to be a sensible corporate decision to keep staff smart - or a can of worms waiting to be opened.

HMV can only hope its fortunes change and this goes off without a hitch. It has already seen its sales fall below ?1 billion for the first time in a decade - as consumers go online for music and DVDs.

Everything is Connected in "Cloud Atlas" | Triangle Arts and ...

Cloud Atlas

Hollywood films are rarely as ambitious as ?Cloud Atlas,? the collaboration between ?Matrix? directors Lana and Larry Wachowski and ?Run Lola Run? helmer Tom Tykwer. When you?re lucky enough to have Tom Hanks as the lead, however, a movie can be as daring as it wants to be.

The filmmakers, jamming almost every single genre imaginable into one massive film, seem to be trying to say everything possible about life into one movie. It?s no small feat to accomplish, yet the Wachowskis and Tykwer pulled it off, creating the best film any of the trio have made since the ?90s ended.

Based on the 2004 novel by David Mitchell, ?Cloud Atlas? juggles six stories, each set in a different time period, from the nineteenth century, 1970s San Francisco, present day London, a ?Blade Runner? looking New Seoul in the 22nd century, to a post-apocalyptic world where language itself has evolved. All of these segments involve underdogs struggling against a higher power, each connected by actions that ripple across time. ?Atlas? supposes that a killer in one life can become a hero in another, depending on the choices they make. Hanks and the other stars, including Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Sturgess, and Hugo Weaving play characters of different nationalities, races, and in some cases gender. Weaving in particular undergoes the most dramatic of changes, playing a Nurse Ratchett-like overseer of a nursing home and a green-faced Mad Hatter-type entity who acts as the devil on Hanks? shoulder in the post-apocalyptic segment.

At almost three hours, ?Cloud Atlas? requires a little patience, at least at first. The film throws you into the fray, and the result can be a little disorienting at first. ?Atlas? spends a lot of time giving the audience a chance to gather their bearings, but stick with it and you won?t be sorry. Some high-minded films can veer off and become pretentious like ?Tree of Life,? but that?s not the case with ?Atlas.? Yes, the film is bold, high-minded and has some very lofty goals it wants to achieve, but things remain just mainstream enough to keep from turning off most of the audience. The tendency to go mainstream makes ?Atlas? easier to digest, but it also feels like the Wachowskis and Tykwer chose to be safe instead of veering too far into art house territory.

It?s easier to figure out everything going on and how each segment connects with the others as the segments unfold. But it isn?t until the very end that everything truly becomes cohesive, the result of which is a swirling mass of ideas about life, love and consequences.

Everything is connected in ?Cloud Atlas,? and while the times may change, the things that make people good or evil doesn?t. It may take some people a few lifetimes to get it right, but in the end, everyone has a chance at redemption.

Filariasis disease, Filariasis causes, Filariasis ... - Zippy Health

Filariasis is a disease that is seen to affect animals as well as human beings. It is caused due to the nematode parasites of the Filariidae order. They are commonly known as filariae. They are grouped on the basis of where the adult worms live in the vertebral host.

Of the many filarial parasites there are only 8 kind that are seen to cause natural infections in the human beings. The lymphatic group and the cutaneous group are very important clinically. There are many other kind of filariae that cause some infections that are incomplete. This is because they are not able to reach adult maturity in the human hosts so they cannot produce microfilaria. All the filarial infections have an impact on the economic and psychosocial front in the endemic areas. India has shown that all the infected patients lose a lot of time from work because of the disease.Filariasis disease

All the Filariae have a particular kind of distribution geographically. Some are found in sub Saharan Africa, some in the Pacific Islands, some in South East Asia and many in India. It has been seen that the microfilaremia increases as a person grows as it is gradually acquired over many years. the filariasis contracted in childhood is called lymphatic filariasis . the proportion of the infected individual does not change. Like most helminthes, filarial parasite duplicate in a secondary host. The parasite normally increases when the host is exposed to additional microfilaria.

Infected individuals normally cannot withstand higher levels of parasitemia till they are ready to level the endemic area. the infection normally occurs when the mosquito vector stays for a prolonged stay in an endemic area. So filariasis is the infectious tropical disease is caused when the filariae is transmitted from the host to the arthropods feeding on blood. These include the mosquitoes and black flies.

Worms cause lymphatic filariasis. These worms lie on the subcutaneous layer of the skin and also occupy the lymph nodes and many times lead to the dreaded disease elephantitis. In many cases the worms cause another disease called elephantiasis.

Loa Loa or the eye worm is the worm causing subcutaneous filariasis. Sitting on the subcutaneous layer of the skin, they cause a lot of problems like river blindness too.

Then there is Mansonella perstans and Mansonella ozzardi which are found in the abdominal cavity. There are adult worms which normally stay in one single tissue and they also release early larvae which are seen to form in the bloodstream.

Filariasis is normally in cases of microfilaraemic when microfilaria is seen in the peripheral blood. There are cases of occult filariasis after clinical observations and sometimes by circulating antigen in the blood.

The most common symptom of lymphatic filariasis is water retention with a lot of skin thickening and underlying tissues. This was the first disease that was discovered to be caused due to mosquito bites. When the parasites start living in the lymphatic system. then the resultant effect is elephantiasis.

Seen affecting the lower portions, the disease is seen to affect the mucous membranes, amputation stumps etc. Different kind of filarial worms affect different parts of the body.

Filariasis is thus a condition that is caused due to mosquito bites. It is a disease that really disintegrates a person.

Know all about filariasis and its related features and symptoms.

Arab Oil and Gas Ministers Say Fossil Fuels Rule

According to the latest International Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Outlook, the global demand for electricity will surge 2.2% annually through Y 2035. The cumulative investment needed in the Oil and Gas supply infrastructure is estimated at US$19-T over the next 25 yrs in order to satisfy the rising demand for energy.

Speaking at a round table discussion on the second day of the on the second day of the forum which started Monday, the minister of oil and gas of Oman, Hamad Al Ruhmi said ?it is unacceptable that 2-B out of 7-B people worldwide have no access to energy, as having access is a basic human right,? adding that ?and Oil and Gas has always been there when world needs.?

He also urged the global community ?not to look only at oil suppliers to tackle the challenges of global rising power demand. ?Examining the demand side is likewise important, because consumers can do a lot to reduce energy usage and to increase use of energy efficiency.? Al Ruhmi said that putting constraints like introducing a carbon tax in every country does not secure the steady flow of energy.

Dr. Mohammed Abdulla Al-Sada, the minister of industry and energy of Qatar, also said that world shall focus in stepping up oil and gas production in order to meet demands. Qatar is the world?s third largest Nat Gas exporter, behind Iran and Russia.

Algeria?s minister of energy and mines Youcef Yousfi, pointed out that investing into Green energies like wind or solar power can reduce carbon footprint ?but their installation is expensive. The demand for Nat Gas, on the other hand, increased after the tragedy of Fukushima in Japan and Algeria will be at the forefront in doubling global production.?

Algeria, one the top Nat Gas exporting nation in North Africa plans to increase Nat Gas exports by 50% until Y 2015.

Iraq?s minister of electricity Karim Aftan Al-Jumaili was more open talking about green energy solutions in his country. ?Iraq is an oil nation but we are eager to increase the use of sustainable energy solutions. We plan to increase the number of dams in the Euphrates River for power generation.? Nevertheless, the minister did not specify how high the share of green energy shall be out of Iraq?s total domestic consumption. ?We expect that renewable energy reach a ?good levels?,? the minister said.

Rio?s new union to protect black players

iol spt pic Rio Ferdinand oct 24

AP

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand warms up prior to the Champions League Group H soccer match against SC Braga at Old Trafford in Manchester.

London - Rio Ferdinand is planning to revolutionise English football with the launch of a breakaway union to protect the interests of black footballers.

Ferdinand, who refused to wear a Kick It Out T-shirt before Manchester United?s clash against Stoke on Saturday, has already joined other high-profile black players in overseeing the first draft of a constitution.

The United defender and his colleagues want to tackle discrimination in all forms and will hold a series of meetings in London over the next few weeks.

The union - which has a working name of The Federation of Black Players but will be open to players from all ethnic backgrounds who share a desire to combat racism in English football - will be self-funded by professionals at every level.

The union?s mission statement is expected to honour the achievements of black footballers and promote unity within the sport at every level, from players to spectators.

The idea, which has been conceived by Ferdinand, is already gathering momentum among black players and has received widespread support.

It will be the first of its kind in this country, but there is a long-established Black Baseball Players Association in the United States.

Ferdinand wants to protect the interests of the current generation of black players and is eager, for instance, to defend the rights of the young players caught up in last week?s traumatic events that marred the England Under 21 game in Serbia.

Although every professional player is entitled to PFA representation, the new union is unlikely to be affiliated with the official body.

That does, however, remain up for discussion, with meetings with the PFA still planned.

But there is a feeling that it should be independent, when one of the issues a number of black players have with the Kick It Out campaign is the fact that it is funded by the Football Association.

There is a good chance Ferdinand would be nominated as the union?s first chairman, although a number of current and retired black players will be invited to occupy executive positions.

The group have been working on a draft constitution for several weeks and, according to sources, the concept is already at the ?advanced planning stage?.

Ferdinand?s relationship with Kick It Out appears to be badly fractured after he was criticised by the pressure group?s chairman, Lord Ouseley, on Monday.

Lord Ouseley repeated his claims that black, multi-millionaire footballers are over-reacting. He said: ?Would Rio tell England where to stick their shirt if picked or does he think the FA has done enough to tackle racism?

Despite Kick It Out?s unwavering support for Anton Ferdinand and his family during his high-profile court case with John Terry, some players refused to support the campaign at the weekend.?

On Monday, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that peace talks had taken place between the United manager and his player on Sunday.

After his initial fury over the stance Ferdinand took in refusing to wear the Kick It Out T-shirt, he said the situation had been ?resolved?.

Ferdinand incurred Ferguson?s wrath after refusing to wear a shirt with the message ?one game one community? at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Brother Anton, along with a number of Queens Park Rangers and Everton players, also refused to support the initiative before Sunday?s Barclays Premier League clash at Loftus Road.

Reading striker Jason Roberts, who refused to wear a Kick It Out T-shirt at Anfield on Saturday, is expected to be a significant voice in the new movement.

He was due to attend a Show Racism the Red Card initiative at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday but the organisation said he is unlikely to do so.

Roberts, who condemned the Kick It Out campaign last week, has already written to the FA with his observations. The Reading striker has raised a number of issues over the FA?s approach to tackling racism.

Lord Ouseley also criticised the FA, who are a funding partner for Kick It Out, during a series of interviews on Monday.

High school football: Brandywine's Gordon learns how to win

Winning hasn?t always come easily for Brandywine running back Courtlan Gordon.

It only seems that way.

The 5-9, 165-pound senior played on back-to-back 0-8 junior varsity teams as a freshman and a sophomore.

?I love football,? Gordon said. ?It?s definitely my favorite sport. But our lack of success was making me not care about it. I didn?t get much playing time as a freshman. I only had about 80 yards rushing. I did better as a sophomore, but we still didn?t win. I had no clue going into varsity football what winning was like.?

But it didn?t take Gordon long to find out. In his first game on the varsity, Gordon rushed for 126 yards and one touchdown and Brandywine beat Lawerence, 28-6.

?The varsity was a big difference,? Gordon said. ?There?s more intensity, there are more people watching and everyone is so much bigger.?

Gordon rushed for more than 1,000 yards despite missing parts of two games with injuries as Brandywine finished 5-4.

?That?s where Courtlan made his biggest jump was between his sophomore and junior years,? said Brandywine coach Mike Nate. ?Finishing 5-4 last year, that team overachieved and largely that was due to Gordon. He was about 80 percent of the offense.?

Gordon decided to make sure that the injuries didn?t happen again.

?I went out for track last spring to get faster,? said Gordon, who was part of Brandywine?s state qualifying 1,600-meter relay team. ?And all summer I ran, I worked out and I did everything I could to get ready. Knowing the conference was changing and the bigger teams were leaving, it gave us hope of making the playoffs. It pumped everyone up. We were playing more teams our own size and it gave us a chance.?

It?s paid huge dividends. Gordon has rushed for 1,489 yards, averaged 8.2 yards per attempt and scored 22 touchdowns. And the Bobcats did earn their first postseason berth in 10 years by finishing 7-2. Brandywine will travel to No. 2-ranked Schoolcraft (9-0) for an opening-round game at 7 Friday night.

?Courtlan has the speed,? Nate said. ?Running track really helped him. I saw him take a swing pass in 7-on-7 play this summer and take it up the sidelines for a touchdown. I saw that he had a gear that I didn?t see last year. He?s also stronger. He did the things necessary in the offseason to make him a better football player. he?s gotten stronger and faster.?

Nate admitted that Gordon doesn?t look powerful at first glance.

?He?s not a big physical specimen,? Nate said. ?If you saw him walking down he street, he just looks like an ordinary kid. But he has instincts about him. He?s a tough kid. And he has confidence in himself. He really enjoys the game. This kind of attitude has helped our younger kids believe we can be successful.?

Gordon is very quick.

?Courtlan has speed and the ability to make good cuts,? Nate said. ?He can grind away at you and get eight or nine yards on three or four plays in a row. All of a sudden, you?re down there ready to score. He picks up the yards. At the end of the day you look at the stats and say, ?I didn?t know you had that many.??

Gordon gives most of the credit for his success to his offensive line.

?My team helps me out,? he said. ?Our line has been super. I have better field vision because I?ve got a better team. My teammates have given me more opportunities to score.?

Gordon looks at the early-season game against New Buffalo as the turning point.

Penned by John Gatins, and marking the return to live action filmmaking by Robert Zemeckis, the movie tells the story of a pilot (Washington) who makes a remarkable landing when the plane he's piloting starts to go down. He's labeled a hero for saving so many lives in what could've been a tragedy, but it soon emerges he may have been drunk at the time, putting his life and career in jeopardy. With the movie soon making its way to theaters, fifteen new images have arrived not only showing Washington, but the extended cast as well, including Kelly Reilly, John Goodman, Don Cheadle and more.

"Flight" will play the Savannah Film Festival this weekend (where Goodman will be earning a career award) before it opens nationwide on November 2nd.?

Ask any businessman or businesswoman about how important reputation is, and they are all going to answer the same thing: it?s the single most important thing which can make the difference between success and complete failure. That goes double for those who plan to take their business online, because unlike in the physical world, nothing is hardly ever forgotten on the internet? in other words, it takes a lot of effort to make the negative information which has been posted go away. The good news is that online business owners no longer need to helplessly put up with their competitor?s smear campaigns thanks to the advent of online reputation management services.

One of the few companies which has managed to build a good reputation for itself in this business (contrary to some companies, which is actually very ironic) is called Reputation Champ. But how exactly do they differentiate themselves from the competition Well, for starters, they use a two-pronged approach to fixing one?s online reputation by promoting positive content; in other words, it improves the user?s reputation all while slowly killing off the negativity about them.

Reputation Management Service

Another aspect which sets them apart are the online reputation monitoring service they offer. What exactly does it offer its users Well, when negative content appears about someone, it is more often than not in the form of some derogatory comment? with most, if not all of those comments being bogus? a typical smear tactic The reputation management service tracks all comments made about a user on Google Places, Yahoo Local, Yelp, Citysearch, Local.com, Kudzu, Judy?s Book, Yellow Pages, Insider Pages, Switchboard, Yellowbook and Dexknows. As if that wasn?t enough, they also offer customer complaint and review websites such as Ripoff Report, Pissed Consumer, Complaints.com, MeasuredUp and My3Cents. Needless to say, a bad review on any of these sites can be extremely damaging to anyone?s business; it is simply imperative to keep track of them.

Social Media Tracking

In addition to regular websites it is also very important to keep track of what?s being said on social media websites, which is precisely what Reputation Champ?s social media tracking online dashboard is for. Other than the fact that users get to benefit from a free 10-day trial for their tool, it should be said that their service is indeed powerful as it is capable of monitoring what is being said on major social networks not only about a business owner, but also his or her competitors. They monitor literally hundreds of websites for their clients, including Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Reddit, Delicious, Flickr, Youtube, Vimeo, and countless more, not to mention that they also keep track of news websites and blogs, such as the Huffington Post, Blogger.com and Blogspot.com.

Reputation Champ provides a few other services which are well worth having a look at, especially in today?s overly aggressive and competitive market; anyone can head on over to their website and gloss over their services it doesn?t cost a dime.
