Brett Simpson and Kai Otton survive the challenging Round 2 conditions at Rip Curl Pro Portugal
America?s Brett Simpson and Australia?s Kai Otton may not have gotten to the best of starts at Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the eighth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which went down in Peniche, Portugal, but they had no intention of letting the early hiccup bring their hopes down.
Determined to redeem themselves after an early stumble, both the surfers managed to bounce back in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at Supertubos on Sunday, October 14, bringing the event to a premature end for Australia?s Matt Wilkinson and Australia?s Adam Melling respectively in the process.
The demanding two-to-three foot waves on offer at the primary event site were in no mood to show any mercy to the elite ASP surfers that were competing for not only honour, but also to secure their place in next year?s fight for the coveted ASP World Title.
The ninth heat of Round 2 pitted Simpson against Wilkinson in a one-on-one battle for the Round 3 spot.
Both the surfers had stumbled in their Round 1 heat and thus found themselves under immense pressure.
It contest between the two determined and at the same time desperate surfers turned out to be a real nail-biting affair, but as the dust settled, Simpson stood victorious with a heat-total of 12.50 points against Wilkinson?s two-wave total of 11.40 points.
The 10th heat saw Otton barely get the better of Melling to make it through into the next round.
The Australian compatriots went hard at each other despite the challenging conditions, with Melling eventually getting into a more favourable position with a heat-total of 8.00 points.
However, Otton got his hands on a juicy left-hander to eventually get to a heat-total of 11.67 points, which secured the fate of the battle in his favour.
?I was actually really lucky to get that good left,? Otton said. ?I made a paddling mistake and I couldn?t catch the wave ? maybe I?m too old. I don?t know, but I missed it and gave up priority and Adam (Melling) actually got a nice righthander straight after. I was just lucky enough that my left was behind that, otherwise he would have had the heat.?
Otton was to take on another of his fellow countryperson Owen Wright in Round 3 of Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
