Sony's Music Unlimited sounds even better with high fidelity streaming

Sony has a treat in store for Music Unlimited subscribing audiophiles: you can now stream music in high quality 320kpbs AAC audio.

Using the service's web, Android, Walkman and PS3 apps, Sony says you can now enable "pristine" high fidelity playback. The entire catalogue offers the 320kpbs AAC option provided by Omnifone, the company that powers Sony's music library.

If you don't want to be stuck with tedious average audio, you'll have to turn the 320kbps streaming option on in Music Unlimited's settings menu.

Sonic Death Monkey

Before today's boost, Music Unlimited used only the HE-AAC v2 codec at 48kbps. So if you aren't running the Android, web or PS3 apps, you'll still be stuck with 48kbps which is crappy at best, but Sony promises a boost to this 'normal' level is coming later this year; it will be going up to 64kpbs HE-AAC v2.

It doesn't look as though the high quality option is available on Sony's smart Bravia TVs nor through its iOS app yet, although Sony promises it will be adding it to other devices "later".

Music Unlimited is Sony's in-house answer to Spotify - the illustrious multi-platform service already offers 320kpbs AAC playback but its quality consistency is questionable at best.

The 49ers Are Pissed At Chris Culliver?s ?Gays Don?t Belong In The NFL? Comments + NFLers Sing Their Fave Beyonce Songs

photo zoQHmZ4_zpsfdb046dc.jpg

The pre-Superbowl drama is on full throttle as folks are extra pissy about San Francisco 49er Chris Culliver?s anti-gay comments that were said on media day.? Check out how his team responded this evening, plus some NFL players singing their fave Beyonce songs?

Cornerback Chris Culliver?yeah, the dude pictured above?is against having gay men on his team.? And in the NFL period.

The two Superbowl teams did their press day yesterday in New Orleans.? And there?s always at least one person who?s going to say some ignorant ish.

photo original_zps9a8b5a3b.jpg

This brings us to Chris Culliver, who went on an anti-gay tirade, that he though was pretty comical, while chatting it up with shoc jock Artie Lang.

"I don?t do the gay guys man," Culliver said. "I don?t do that. No, we don?t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do."

He then proceeded to pretty much say gays don?t belong in the league at all, and should only "come out" after leaving for 10 years.? Check out the audio below:

And after all of the internet was up in arms today after these words surfaced, the 49ers organization quickly put out its own statement condemning the comments:

?The San Francisco 49ers reject the comments that were made yesterday, and have addressed the matter with Chris. There is no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. We have and always will proudly support the LGBT community.?

How many loud boo?s is HE gonna get on Sunday?

?

And in more lighthearted NFL news, NFL.com posted a cute video today of the players talking about (and singing) their favorite Beyonce songs while expressing their fan-dom.? It was all a nod to Mrs. BKC rocking the Pepsi Halftime show on Sunday.? Peep the vid above.

Family, Parenting, Reviews, and Giveaways - The Attic Girl: Gifts for ...

We always look forward to birthdays at our house.? They are a chance to celebrate milestones with family and friends.? And another excuse to eat delicious treats.? Because really, what would a birthday be without a yummy indulgement?

My hubby is celebrating a birthday this month and sometimes he can be tough to buy for.? He's not hard to please; he's exactly the opposite.? He will tell me he doesn't need anything and I am left hunting for birthday gift ideas.

Shari's berries was right up my alley.? They have a great selection of delicious treats to choose from for every occasion, from cookies and cupcakes to dipped strawberries.? Neither my hubby nor I have ordered anything from this company, but we had heard great things about them and I was excited to pick out something to surprise my sweetheart!

{I will warn you now that you will end up hungry and possibly drooling after reading this post.}?

?I chose this combination of 4 Caramel Pretzels and a Full Dozen Hand-Dipped Medley Berries.? Milk Chocolate, White chocolate, dark chocolate, caramel....this one has it all.?? It combines my hubby's love for fruit, pretzels, and chocolate.? I figured I couldn't go wrong.

The ordering process is easy peasy.??? You can choose the date you want your order shipped, which is a good thing, because you want to be home to get this box off your porch as soon as possible to refrigerate.? You will have to pay a bit extra in shipping if you want a morning delivery (I opted not to).

The box arrived in mid-afternoon on my doorstep.? I'm glad I was paying attention because I didn't hear a knock at the door.

There was some padding in the top of the box and an ice pack.? The instructions on the outside of the box are pretty humorous.? I most definitely would have listened if this had been for me.? But instead, I opened it up, took some photos, and put it in the fridge like a good wife. ?
?The box included a gift card, an ingredient list, and some discounts toward my next order.? I was a little disappointed that the pretzels arrived with half of them broken, but it wasn't a big enough deal for me to complain.? The strawberries were absolutely perfect: no melting, no broken chocolate coating.??

These hand-dipped strawberries were very fresh and juicy.? The chocolate was just right; not too rich and the right amount covering the berry.? My hubby devoured about half of them when they arrived.? (I helped him out by trying one and it was nummy!) He finished the box the next day.? I would suggest planning on eating them the day they arrive while they are at their freshest.? A couple of the berries weren't as fresh the day after.??

{Don't they look delicious?}?

Hubby said the pretzels were quite good.? Because they are dipped in chocolate and caramel, the insides are not super crisp.? But he likes a softer pretzel so he was happy.? I am not a big pretzel eater, but I tried a bite.? I definitely liked the chocolate and caramel together, especially the white chocolate.?

This gift was a huge hit and satisfied my hubby's (and my) sweet tooth.? We have definitely become Shari's Berries fans through this experience!? While these are expensive for a family on a budget (roughly $65 including shipping), they are certainly a delicious treat for special occasions, especially Valentine's Day gifts.? And you can find coupon codes on their site.

Right now, you can save 20% off your order of $39 or more through 2/12/13. Find out how at this link:

French troops take another objective in Mali

SEVARE, Mali (AP) ? French forces took control the airport in Kidal, seizing a key position in the last remaining urban stronghold of Islamist extremists in northern Mali, officials said Wednesday, with France's foreign minister said French forces would depart Mali "quickly."

French and Malian troops have recaptured two of the other provincial capitals, Timbuktu and Gao, in recent days. Once France, with its thousands of troops, fighter planes and helicopters, leaves, Mali's weak army and soldiers from neighboring countries Islamists might be hard-pressed to retain control of northern Mali's cities if the Islamists attempt a comeback from their desert hideouts.

"Now it's up to African countries to take over," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told Le Parisien newspaper. "We decided to put the means ? in men and supplies ? to make the mission succeed and hit hard. But the French aspect was never expected to be maintained. We will leave quickly."

Haminy Maiga, the interim president of the Kidal regional assembly, said French forces met no resistance when they arrived late Tuesday.

"The French arrived at 9:30 p.m. aboard four planes, which landed one after another. Afterwards they took the airport and then entered the town, and there was no combat," said Maiga, who had been in touch with people in the town by satellite phone as all the normal phone networks were down.

"The French are patrolling the town and two helicopters are patrolling overhead," he added.

In Paris, French army Col. Thierry Burkhard confirmed that the airport was taken overnight and described the operation in Kidal itself as "ongoing."

On Tuesday, a secular Tuareg rebel group had asserted that they were in control of Kidal and other small towns in northern Mali. Maiga said those fighters had left Kidal and were at the entry posts on the roads from Gao and Tessalit.

France, the former colonial ruler, began sending in troops, helicopters and warplanes on Jan. 11 to turn the tide after the armed Islamists began encroaching on the south, toward the capital. French and Malian troops seized Gao during the weekend and took Timbuktu on Monday. The Islamists gave up both cities and retreated into the surrounding desert.

In Gao's main market, women returned to work on Wednesday without the black veils required by the Islamists. They wore vibrant patterned fabrics and sported makeup.

While most crowds in the freed cities have been joyful, months of resentment toward the Islamists bubbled into violence in Gao.

Video footage filmed by an amateur cameraman and obtained by The Associated Press shows a mob attacking the symbol of the oppressive regime, the Islamic police headquarters.

Some celebrate cheering "I am Malian," while others armed with sticks and machetes attack suspected members of the Islamist regime. The graphic images shot Saturday show the mob as they mutilate the corpses of two young suspected jihadists lying dead in the street.

Gao's mayor and governor met Wednesday with community elders in an attempt to bring a halt to the vigilante attacks.

There are 3,500 French troops involved in the operation and 2,900 Africans, according to the latest figures from the French Defense Ministry.

Mali's military was severely affected by a military coup last year coup and has a reputation for disorganization and bad discipline. Malian soldiers have been accused of fatally shooting civilians suspected of links to the Islamists. The military has promised to investigate the allegations.

Carving China's own Buddhist tradition

Home > Travel

By Liu Xiaolin, Shanghai Daily, January 26, 2013

Ancient Buddhist grottoes along the Silk Road in western China are magnificent art that show the influence of many cultures over more than 1,500 years.

Shanxi, China --? Walking along spectacular Lifo Avenue, with its 26 marble ornamental pillars, I marvelled at the grand renovations undertaken at the Yungang Grottoes site. Compared with last time I visited nearly a decade ago, the zone has expanded to almost eight times the previous size, adding ancient-style pavilions and temples, a well-equipped exhibition hall and even a castle-style theater that stretches deep underground.

<< The seated Buddha in Cave No. 20 is the signature of the Yungang Grottoes.(Photo/Shanghai Daily)

Splendid as the renovation is, I quickly headed toward the grotto complexes. It is only when you see the grottoes stretching before your eyes that you can understand the beauty of Yungang Buddhist art.

In the south cliffs of Wuzhou Mountain west to Datong City, Shanxi Province's second largest city, the grottoes were created in the reign of Emperor Wencheng (AD 440-465) in Northern Wei Dynasty.

They were an attempt at atonement after the emperor's grandfather, Emperor Taiwu, attempted to extirpate Buddhism in AD 445, during a struggle with the Han insurgents. In the turmoil, numerous temples and Buddhist sutras were burned, statues toppled and monks killed.

Monk Tanyao is one of the lucky few who managed to escape. Later when Buddhism was revived, he convinced Wencheng to construct the grottoes.

Today, 45 of more than 200 grottoes in Yungang are open to the public. Most were created before the empire relocated the capital from Pingcheng (today's Datong) to Luoyang in Henan Province in AD 494. While the huge deep caves on the east and middle were ordered by royals, smaller ones peppering the west are folk art from before AD 494. Do take a look at these smaller ones if you have time, you will still find many surprises that make you awed by the folk wisdom of ancients.

Yungang Grottoes stand out among the four main grotto complexes in China, not only for kaleidoscopic carvings of Buddha and Jataka (the previous lives of Buddha), flying deities and musicians and monks but also for blending traditional Chinese carving with Indian Gandhara art.

A gateway to the west, it is where Buddhist grotto art starts to show Chinese characteristics, with carvings of Chinese pavilions and shrines.

Depictions of Buddha also vary: from the early period's simple masculinity; to the details and lavish decoration of the middle period; to later slender, attractive statues, reflecting folk images for immortals. That created a template for grotto art in northern China, that prevailed until the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).

It's also a good place to study ancient history, art, architecture and even music - it took me quite a while to identify musical instruments from a group sculpture. Some of them no longer exist.

It's quite amazing that Yungang, built into on a sandstone cliff that is easily weathered, remains a good condition, compared with other grottoes.

Small holes in the statues tell of later renovations. The largest was in the Liao Dynasty (907-1125) when multi-storied pavilions were built on the cliff face, covering the entrance to almost every larger cave, protecting the grottoes from the elements. Renovations also saw parts repaired and the eyes of statues decorated with black glaze.

As with other Chinese grottoes, many caves are scarred by looting by explorers who hacked off parts and shipped them to places such as Japan, France and the United States.

Despite this, Yungang Grottoes remains relatively intact, an enticing gem that continues to beguile millions of visitors every year.Know as the "Five Caves by Tanyao," Cave Nos. 16-20 are the earliest group of grottoes built by Monk Tanyao on Wuzhou Mountain. Each main Buddha statue represents one emperor of the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386-534), through to the reign of Emperor Wencheng.

The sitting Buddha in Cave No. 20 is the signature for the Yungang Grottoes, frequently found on postcards and other souvenirs.

The front ceiling of the cave collapsed in early times, leaving the Buddha and the two others at its side in the open air. It has become a popular spot for tourists to take photographs. With a height of 13.75 meters, the Buddha, said to resemble the state founder Emperor Daowu, has a typical look used to represent the strong, tough northern nomads: with a full face; a broad forehead; a high nose bridge; deep narrow eyes; large earlobes; and broad shoulders. This style of figure dominates in early period of the Yungang Grottoes. A strong Indian influence can also be found in the clothing and accessories depicted in the statues and relief sculptures. Buddha often wears a robe over one shoulder, a common style in India. And a seated Buddha at the east side of Cave No. 18 wears a crown decorated with sun-and-moon patterns derived from the Persian Sassanid Empire. A vivid group sculpture of Indian monks also shows the exotic influences from the civilization to the west.

Cave No. 19 creatively set three Buddha statues of the past, present and future in three separate chambers, lending solemnity to surroundings. At 16.8 meters high, sitting Buddha Shakyamuni is the second largest statue in Yungang,

The standing Buddha in Cave No. 18 is based on Emperor Taiwu. His robe is decorated with thousands of Buddhas, implying his regret at persecuting Buddhism.

Emperor Wencheng's likeness is found the No. 16 cave. Unlike his predecessors, he wears a robe covering both shoulders, with a long knot dangling in front. That style resembles the Gandhara-style robe with a deep-V neck that is often seen in mid-period grottoes, and helps indicates these statues were made later.

Cave Nos. 9-13

These five caves are collectively called "Wuhua Caves," - five glorious caves - in recognition of their gorgeous colored paint work in later dynasties over the relief sculptures inside and out.

A peaceful cross-legged Buddha statue sits in Cave No. 13. Holding his left hand in front of his body while resting the other on his knee, the Buddha resembles the fifth ruler of the dynasty, Emperor Xianwen. A stone warrior, said to be his son - the later Emperor Xiaowen - stands on his leg and holds his left arm, both as a support and interesting decorative feature.

Cave No. 12 is also known as "the cave of music and dance" as it houses exquisite colored relief sculptures of flying dancers and musicians. In the top of its north wall are carved 14 flying musicians in striking poses, each playing a traditional Chinese music instrument. These include: the xuan (a round or oval-shaped pottery wind instrument); the guqin (an ancient seven-stringed plucked instrument); the pipa (a vertical plucked stringed instrument); a horizontal bamboo flute; the konghou (an ancient plucked stringed instrument), a waist drum and the paixiao (a vertical bamboo flute).

Some of these instruments are only found in ancient writings.Numerous relief sculptures of such elegant flying musicians and dancers cover the walls and on the vaults over the windows where sunshine streams in, casting its light over the Buddhas.

Shrine sculpture is another highlight in these five caves, varying in styles and Buddha statues. Shrines come in a number of shapes, including arches, tents or pavilions, while Buddhas sit, stand or cross their legs, a kaleidoscopic depiction of reincarnation.

Cave No. 9 and No. 10 is a double cave; if seen from outside, it has both a front chamber and rear chamber. Double caves in Northern Wei Dynasty can be traced back to Dowager Feng. The widow took charge at an early age of 24, and oversaw an age of suppression.

For 25 years, the empire was held by two "saint" rulers. Therefore, double caves were built to honor these two "saints."On the north wall of the front chamber in Cave No. 10 is a relief sculpture of Sumeru, the mountain that stands in the center of the world, according to ancient Indian mythology. Some 5 meters by 2 meter, carvings include children, deer-like animals, double dragons, the Indian monk Kumarajiva and Deva Asura. On the ceiling of a window over the group sculpture is a blossoming double-petal lotus; as if the shining sun, surrounded by flying deities.

Cave No. 7-8

These two caves form the earliest double cave in Yungang, where cultures from the east and India to the west harmoniously set against and embrace each other.

Inside the arch door to Cave No. 8, on the east wall is a relief sculpture of Indian Shiva Mahesvara. Riding on the sacred ox, the three-headed deity holds the sun, and a bow and arrows in his eight hands. On the opposite side is his son, Kumara, with five heads and six hands riding a peacock. The sculptures illustrate how the Yungang Grottoes borrowed and artistically combined elements from different religions and areas.

On the south wall inside Cave No. 7, over an arch door, is a rectangular curtain-shaped shrine, featuring six plump donors in flowing robes. These six donors were extolled by Liang Sicheng - the "Father of Modern Chinese Architecture" - as "the six beauties in Yungang," for their elegant shapes and enchanting smile.

The double cave also features early period flying deities with bright smooth foreheads, round buns and drifting dresses.Posing in a deep-V, the deities looks cute in an endearingly clumsy way.

If you go

How to get there:

There's one and only direct flight from Shanghai Pudong Airport to Datong Yungang Airport. Trains running through Shandong and Shanxi provinces, Beijing and Tianjin municipalities and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region all stop by Datong. Take Bus No. 4, 26, 28 and 17 to Xinkaili Bus Station and change to Bus No. 3 that runs directly to Yungang Grottoes.

Travel tips:

The scenic area is open every day from 8:30am to 5pm. Entrance fee is 150 yuan (US$24), with half price admission for students and the over-65s. Tour guides charge 120 yuan, or you can rent an electronic tour device for 100 yuan. This gives detailed explanations in English, French and Japanese.

Obama launches push for immigration overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Seeking swift action on immigration, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will try to rally public support behind his proposals for giving millions of illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, as well as making improvements to the legal immigration system and border security.

The president will launch his push in a campaign-style event in Las Vegas, a day after a bipartisan group of senators unveiled their own plan for addressing an issue that has languished in Washington for years.

Administration officials said Obama would largely endorse the senators' efforts, though immigration advocates said they expected the president's own proposals to be more progressive than the Senate group's, including a faster pathway to citizenship.

The simultaneous immigration campaigns were spurred by the November presidential election, in which Obama won an overwhelming majority of Hispanic voters. The results caused Republican lawmakers who had previously opposed immigration reform to reconsider in order to rebuild the party's reputation among Hispanics, an increasingly powerful political force.

Most of the recommendations Obama will make Tuesday are not new. He outlined an immigration blueprint in May 2011 but exerted little political capital to get it passed by Congress, to the disappointment of many Hispanics.

Obama "believes that we are at a moment now where there seems to be support coalescing at a bipartisan level behind the very principles that he has long put forward and behind principles that have in the past enjoyed bipartisan support," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "And that is a very positive thing."

The president was to make his pitch in Nevada, a political battleground he carried in November, in large part because of support from Hispanics in the state.

Nationally, Obama won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote, giving him a key advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Administration officials said the president would bolster his 2011 immigration blueprint with some fresh details. His original plan centered on four key areas: a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., improved border security, an overhaul of the legal immigration system, and an easier process for businesses to verify the legal status of workers.

Administration officials said they were encouraged to see the Senate backing the same broad principles. In part because of the fast action on Capitol Hill, Obama does not currently plan to send lawmakers formal immigration legislation.

However, officials said the White House does have legislation drafted and could fall back on it should the Senate process stall. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy.

Gay and lesbian advocates were also expecting Obama's proposals to include recognition of same-sex couples where one partner is American and another is not.

Obama's previous proposals for creating a pathway to citizenship required those already in the U.S. illegally to register with the government and submit to security checks; pay registration fees, a series of fines and back taxes; and learn English. After eight years, individuals would be allowed to become legal permanent residents and could eventually become citizens five years later.

The Senate group's pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. would be contingent upon securing the border and improving tracking of people in the U.S. on visas. Linking citizenship to border security could become a sticking point between the White House and lawmakers.

The Senate framework would also require those here illegally to pass background checks and pay fines and taxes in order to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency, a critical step toward citizenship. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already waiting for a green card within the current immigration system.

Passage of legislation by the full Democratic-controlled Senate is far from assured, but the tallest hurdle could come in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans who've shown little interest in immigration reform.

The senators involved in formulating the immigration proposals were Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

How is Coke Fighting Obesity? | Care2 Healthy Living

If you were to informally poll reasonably informed Americans about what exactly were the causes of the lasting obesity epidemic in this country, more pointedly, who in the world of corporate foods was to blame, the list would probably be something like McDonald?s, Hostess, and probably Coca-Cola.

The logic around this has to do with something to do with the fact that these companies (and there are many others guilty of the same thing) peddle all sorts of calorie-dense, nutritionally-vacant, goods that American love just a bit too much. These products are leaving people fat, unhealthy and riddled with health problems including obesity. While McDonald?s is holding on to its bit of fast food market share, and Hostess is being dissolved like a Twinkie in a nuclear holocaust, Coca-Cola is doing what it can to mitigate the PR disaster that is our nation?s current obsession with health and obesity.

The way the Coca-Cola Company is addressing this is with a persuasive new public service advertisement that positions the company as fighting alongside concerned Americans as a sort of brother-in-arms. With this new ad, the company offers up the idea that it is providing ?solutions? to the current obesity epidemic with their diet drink portfolio, charitable contributions to fitness programs and by insisting that if you take in more calories than you burn, you will gain weight.

They attempt to equal the caloric playing field with this statement, ?All calories count. No matter where they come from, including Coca-Cola and everything else with calories.? This statement implies that a fistful of almonds or celery is just as good as a 12-ounce can of Coke, as long as you exert the energy to burn off the calories consumed. (See the advertisement above.)

The one of many problems with this corporate logic is the convenient glossing over of what constitutes a nutrient-rich calorie, and what is just an empty calorie. To be sure, a serving of Coke is the definition of empty calories.

Sure there are other problems with this sort of feel-good, ?we are all on the same team? propaganda, and I am willing to give the Coca-Cola Company some credit for not wholly ignoring the issue, but aren?t they just really serving their own interests on this one? Couldn?t they do more to clean up their product line, offer some real nutrition, and promote healthy living outside of their corporate interests? What are your thoughts on this new campaign?

Mali: French bring the troops, world now bringing the funds (+video)

International donors have pledged $455.53 million for an international campaign tackling Islamist militants in Mali.

Pledges of international aid and military support are flooding into Mali just 2-1/2 weeks after France launched a military offensive in the West African country.?And though spirits are high after French forces reportedly took the cities of Gao and Timbuktu in recent days, many warn fully stamping out Islamist rebels in Mali?s north and neighboring countries could take years.

Yesterday, close to 1,000 French and 200 Malian troops overtook the airport in Timbuktu, prior to entering the ancient city. Residents told the BBC that the Islamists departed days earlier, after bombs were dropped on their bases there.

?There were no shots fired, no blood spilt. Not even passive resistance with traps," a colonel heading the French helicopter operations in Timbuktu said of overtaking the city.

During the weekend troops also secured the city of Gao. Both Timbuktu and Gao are important ?strategically and symbolically? since they have been under the Islamist rebel control since last April.

But according to The Christian Science Monitor?s correspondent in Mali, the relative ease with which troops have been able to reclaim cities and towns from the Islamists doesn?t necessarily mean their work is near completion.

So far, their enemies have put up little resistance. French troops have rolled unopposed into many towns and villages in recent days. But more complex work lies ahead. Militants may re-emerge as a guerrilla force, while Mali?s government and its partners have the daunting task of?restoring order and public services after months of turmoil.

? Electricity is down, economic life has withered, and state facilities have been trashed. Yesterday morning, French troops rolled into the town of Niafounk?, north of L?r?. They found its?lakeside fishing port converted to a military barracks covered with jihadi?graffiti,?and now deserted.

?Every place they occupied, the Islamists turned it directly to their own uses,? says Youssef Maiga, a builder who turned out with hundreds of locals to cheer the French arrival. As French soldiers accompanying journalists mixed with the crowds, Mr. Maiga approached a lieutenant.

?Will more of you come? We have nothing here,? Maiga said.

?We?re not going to leave you,? the lieutenant replied.

When or how France will leave Mali may be an increasingly salient challenge for the former colonial power, whose intervention, at the behest of Mali?s interim President Dioncounda Traor?, came months before a Western-backed, West African-led plan was set to go into effect.

France has pledged to stay in Mali until it is stabilized, but with unknown numbers of Islamists still in the country that end goal is fuzzy. On Monday, French President Francois Hollande said at a news conference: ?We are winning in Mali,? reports CNN.

The international community, meanwhile, has stepped up in recent days to make sure Mali defeats the Islamist rebels there, who have limited the rights and activities of locals since last year.

The African Union agreed yesterday to contribute $50 million to the mission in Mali. According to the BBC, ?in a list of donations carried on the AU?s Twitter? feed today, Japan pledged $120 million; Germany $20 million;?India and China $1 million each; and the US $96 million.

And the?Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS),?which initially pledged 3,300 troops in Mali, expects to see that number to rise. ?Up until now, a dozen African nations have offered to contribute to this force, bringing its total to 5,000 or 6,000,? reports the South African government news agency.

France currently has close to 3,000 troops in Mali, and an estimated 8,000 African troops are expected to eventually take over, reports the BBC.

In an effort to enable Malians to maintain control over their territory once international powers step back, officials said today that?European Union countries are meeting in Brussels to discuss contributing more troops, reports the Associated Press. The mission could include deploying 500 people, half of whom would be working as military trainers, by April 1.

The United States, for its part, has said it will not deploy combat troops to Mali. However, during the weekend the US agreed to provide support for in-flight refueling to French troops there, reports Bloomberg News. In a sign of increased US involvement in the region, the US and Niger signed a pact that will allow US military personnel to be stationed in the country, which sits just east of Mali. Bloomberg reports the plan has been in the works for more than a year, and could possibly include the stationing of US drones in Niger.?

According to the AP the US has already been providing help in the region:

The U.S. has been providing military transport to help move French troops and equipment. The U.S. flew one refueling mission on Sunday, delivering 33,000 pounds of fuel, the U.S. Africa Command said.

The U.S. is also assisting six African countries: Niger, Chad, Nigeria, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Togo with "non-lethal equipment" and training, as well as transport to move troops to Mali, [Don Yamamoto US principal deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs] said.

Yesterday in Timbuktu, crowds came out to cheer on the French and Malian forces that liberated their home. Flags from both countries were flying, and people were dancing and celebrating, according to a second Monitor report.

?Under the Islamists, you could never see this ? people listening to music together in the open air,? says Ciss? Al Mansour, a cook in Timbuktu.

The United Nations reports that more than 11,000 people have been forced to flee their homes due to the fighting in Mali, and an estimated 23,000 have been displaced since the crisis started, according to Bloomberg.

AFL-CIO chief vows ?full-fledged campaign? for immigration overhaul

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka (Carolyn Kaster/AP)Organized labor is ?entirely behind? comprehensive immigration reform and will mount a ?full-fledged? campaign to help drive it through Congress, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told Yahoo News on Tuesday.

Trumka, whose federation comprises 57 unions representing some 12 million people, called the planned overhaul ?one of our top priorities right now.? He spoke by telephone from Las Vegas, Nev., where he was to attend President Barack Obama?s speech on immigration reform.

?We think everybody ought to have the right to work hard and to progress to citizenship,? Trumka said.

White House officials cite robust support from organized labor?which at times in recent history has opposed giving the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants on U.S. soil a path to citizenship?as a key factor in their optimism about getting a comprehensive bill through Congress. They also point to the expansion of support among Christians, notably evangelicals. And they joke that the difficulty of managing a broad coalition is the kind of problem they like having.

Unions ?did have at one point some differences? on the issue, but ?the entire labor movement is entirely behind this now,? Trumka said. ?We?ll be at the table the whole time this thing is being developed to make sure it meets the needs of workers.? Once it?s drafted, he continued, ?we?ll be pushing this thing [with a] full-fledged campaign? aimed at both public opinion and wary lawmakers.

?We?ll be targeting those in the House or the Senate that either are recalcitrant and don?t want to do anything or aren?t where they need to be," he said.

Labor wants to see a comprehensive overhaul?"It can?t just be hit and miss," Trumka added?that does a better job of managing legal immigration to meet labor market needs, ensures employers are not exploiting undocumented immigrants, gives those on U.S. soil illegally a path to citizenship and makes sure that families are not broken up, he said.

Trumka also noted that unions are ?a little concerned? about a proposed provision in the bipartisan Senate framework requiring that undocumented immigrants seeking legal status provide ?a proven history of employment.? That could be difficult?employers may not want to admit that they hired such workers?but it could ?be defined in a very broad sense,? he said.

?The system is clearly broken right now, doesn?t work for anybody, doesn?t work for the country,? he added.

The AFL-CIO, the country's largest labor federation, isn't exactly a newcomer to the debate. It produced an outline of its own in August 2009. While organized labor's national clout has diminished along with shrinking membership, unions remain a core constituency for Democrats, and much of the party's backbone, providing cash and voter outreach.

Online 'tipping point' reached for business travel - www.travelweekly ...

Online 'tipping point' reached for business travel

A tipping point has been reached in the ability to book business travel online but only a third are able to do so on a mobile or tablet device, a study out today? shows.

Research by Amadeus found that two thirds (66%) of travellers are now able to book their business travel through an online booking tool.

But just 33% are able to book travel on a mobile or tablet device, providing a ?significant area of opportunity? for travel managers, Travel management companies and technology firms to put their knowledge and company policies in the hands of the traveller.

Convenience is prioritised by corporate travellers above cost and comfort, with 62% saying this was the most important factor when travelling for business.
Just over a fifth (22%) indicated cost as their top priority, with only 15% putting comfort first.

Almost a third (32%) of the 400 business travellers polled in the UK and Ireland would also like to have the opportunity to extend their business trip to include self-funded leisure travel and 14% would like to be provided with information into local sights.

But the report provides mixed reading for travel managers.

While half of the travellers surveyed said that they fully understand their company?s corporate travel policy (51%), this leaves nearly half who have a more limited or no understanding.

Respondents demonstrated an inability to pinpoint the value added by the corporate travel department. Almost half (47%) said that the department neither helped nor hindered the business and 15% said that the corporate travel department hindered their ability to do business.

More than a third (34%) of travellers surveyed said that they had gone ?off plan? during their 2012 business travel. This increased to half (51%) for those travellers who made 11 or more trips. Nearly a fifth (18%) of them went ?off plan? at least five times during the year.

Half (51%) of respondents had to make changes to their travel plans last year with 37% having to amend their flights whilst on the road.

These statistics indicate a clear opportunity for travel departments to add value as only 30% of travellers said they had been ?very effective? at making the necessary amendments to their bookings.

Amadeus UK and Ireland managing director Diane Bouzebiba said: ?These findings clearly identify opportunities for travel departments to introduce new services and technologies that will deliver additional value to travellers.

?Over the course of this year, a particular priority for Amadeus UK is to help corporate travel departments better understand the emerging needs of the 21st century business traveller.

?Putting their expertise in the hands of corporate travellers and exploring mobile technology to facilitate the planning, booking and amendment of travel arrangements, will go a long way to help keep travellers on plan, safe and better connected in 2013 and beyond.?

Secret Service dog's death in line of duty

A Belgian Malinois. (Getty Images via CNN)

A Secret Service dog fell to its death in New Orleans over the weekend while performing a sweep of a six-story parking garage. The garage was next to a Ritz Carlton where Vice President Joe Biden was speaking.

The bomb-sniffing dog, a Belgian Malinois, fell from the roof of the parking deck next to the hotel at approximately 6 p.m., New Orleans police told WWL-TV.

Biden was attending a fundraiser for Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu's re-election campaign.

Federal agents rushed the black and brown shepherd to a Metairie Veterinary hospital via motorcade, but veterinarians were unable to revive the dog, WWL reported.

According to CNN, the agency began using canines to detect explosives in 1975:

It uses Belgian Malinois because they are small and have short hair?making it easy for them to work in the heat. They are also very sociable. Each dog and its handler has to complete 20 weeks of training before beginning work, the agency said. When it's time for a dog to retire?usually after about 10 years?it is retired to its handler.

Secret Service spokesman Max Milien told the network the dog's death was a "tragic accident."

Anger Management and Modifying Your Daily Behavior | Healthy ...

Webmaster | January 27, 2013 (10 hours ago) | no comments

Anger Management and Modifying Your Daily BehaviorAnger management is a strategy by which a human being comes to discover how their anger is brought on.

Sometimes conflicts in critiques, insecurity, or emotions of unfair treatment could lead to these issues.

Many modern day beliefs with regard to anger management lean toward the premise of living in the moment.

Once we?realize?that we in reality have very little or no power over other people?s thoughts and ideas, we can start to liberate ourselves and take responsibly for our own anger management triggers.

Occasionally in the course of a dispute folks will come to feel that another person?s opinion is a immediate attack on the very moral?fiber?of an individual. All of us is entitled to their own attitude and opinion.. Other people?s. You may wonder why this can make us angry.

The major mistake that people make whenever they process ridicule is that they believe the criticism to be a personal attack and thus they tend to take it personally. An effective anger management technique lies in seeing criticism constructively.

For instance, your spouse might complain that they don?t receive enough attention from you. Rather than pondering it as a personal attack, a very good anger management method will focus on this conduct specifically and not be offended by a personal attack.

By removing ourselves emotionally from criticism, we can commence to cultivate an perspective toward change that is balanced and can lead to less episodes of inappropriate anger. We have developed the process sound far too effortless, understandably.

But the truth of the matter is, it is challenging to alter. ?No pain, no gain? is a basic term that can come to mind in relation to anger management. It is so straightforward to return to old?behavior? specifically when we believe another person is attacking us personally. At this stage you really should seek out professional support with your anger troubles.

All through my tenure as a psychologist, many individuals who wanted advice in dealing with melancholy and anxiety. the underlining sense was anger. To understand the root of the condition, it could also require a variety of classes. We can start working together the moment the complaint with the customer is acknowledged as one of anger management

Mastering anger management skills has assisted countless people take notice of an improvement in overall amounts of fear and depression after only a couple of sessions.

Collectively with depression, fear, and a great number of other stressors that can take place in the path of everyday, typical daily life, anger must be harnessed to make full use of your intellect and refine it to the greatest of its healthy capacity.

A number of alternate concepts around psychological health complications, for example anger management concentrate highly on methods such as meditation and self-awareness therapy. These actions can give you power over your ideas as well as tranquility of mind, specifically feelings of rage and anger.

Anger by itself is not a negative thing, it is important to note this at this point. Quite a few of the accomplishments or overcoming of factors in history have at some point been motivated by anger.

The appropriate utilization of anger has the capacity to be an extremely potent foundation of energy.

All through history, anger has been accountable for bringing about incredible changes in the world and the way that we are living.

Amazon Takes On Google, Facebook & Dropbox By Adding Auto-Uploads To Its Cloud Drive Photos App

amazon cloud drive photosLook out, Google, Facebook and Dropbox? Amazon has now added automatic mobile photo uploads to its Amazon Cloud Drive Photos Android app, in an update released yesterday evening. The functionality makes the otherwise fairly bare bones photos app more of a competitor in the space, given that Google (via its Google+ app), Dropbox, and Facebook (iOS-only for now), have all recently eased the collection of users' photos from smartphones and tablets by introducing automatic uploading features to their respective mobile applications.

Automotive abundance at PA Auto Show belies overall shortage of ...

The Pennsylvania Auto Show is a veritable ocean of high-octane engines, luxury interiors and the latest in automotive technology. All of it shines just so under the carefully positioned Auto Show spotlights. What car buyer could want more?

This is all very true if you're about to pony up for a spanking-new ride -- one whose virgin rubber tires have never touched the road.

But what if your budget is more in keeping with the lower-cost used-car market? Then, the automotive abundance represented by the PA Auto Show seems to shrink a bit. Sure, the Auto Show has its own used car section that seems big enough. You can even kick the tires, bargain the price and buy on the spot.

?Yet, even this belies an overall shortage of low-mileage, lightly-run used cars at car lots across the country.?

In far too many of those lots, one of rarest finds remains that used-car cream puff of old. You know the one. That shiny, softly used three-year-old car with less than 36,000 miles showing on the odometer?

It's a second-hand buyer's dream. A vehicle in which the first owner took the hit of most of the depreciation, while still leaving plenty of car for years of trouble-free service for a lucky second owner.

Only, these babies are in short supply at many car lots ? both across Pennsylvania and nationwide. And when you do find one, they tend to be cherry-picked as part of the dealership's certified pre-owned program. This means they come with top-to-bottom inspection checks, better financing and comprehensive warranties ? but also higher sticker prices.

So what gives with the short supply of great used cars?

Turns out, the used car market is another victim of the Great Recession. But not in the ways you might think.

When the economy went south, many car owners decided to put off purchases and continue to roll with whatever wheels he or she had. So much so, that the average age of the cars currently on the road is nearing a record-high of 11 years. Thus, millions of cars that would have long ago come in for trades are still trucking.

"There is a good market for vehicles over 100,000 miles," said Brett Corcoran, general sales manager with L B Smith Ford Lincoln in Lemoyne. "But a lot of dealers don't get into that market."

What worse, the credit crunch that grew out of the recession put a stranglehold on many car leasing programs. This choked off an important source of used car cream puffs ? all those three-year-old vehicles coming off lease.

All of this has actually raised the prices of prime used cars, which are now snapped up into dealer's select programs. Sure, you get warranties and financing that rival new cars. But you pay for it.

Otherwise , the used car market is stretched in the other direction. Namely, the high-mileage, take-your-chances end. Many vehicles have six-digits on their odometers.

Look for this to change as the economy continues to improve, according to area car dealers. New car sales are already accelerating, and leases are beginning to snap back into favor.

"Leasing seems to be back," declared L B Smith's Corcoran. "That is one of the avenues where Ford has really stepped up. There are more aggressive lease plans. That's an avenue to bring people into showrooms at a faster pace."

And when all those newly leased vehicles roll back to car dealers in three years' time, this will help re-supply used car stocks. But for too long, those lease deals were little more than a trickle. Indeed, some car companies all but halted these riskier transactions, where the triple burden of financing, depreciation and market softness all fall on auto manufactures.

"Leasing was the first thing to go when credit tightened up," explained John Hickey, president of Sutliff Chevrolet of Harrisburg, adding that Chevy was among the companies that slammed the brakes on leases.

"They just stopped leasing," Hickey said of the car company. "That was a huge disadvantage, and it still is. There is this two-year hole of lease vehicles. We are not getting those lease returns, so we are not getting those customers back in."

After all, when a lease expires, the lease holder needs another car. And the car he's turning in is soon bound for another buyer on the second-hand market. In other words, an entire auto ecosystem nearly ground to a halt.

Now, it's revving up.

"If you're a manufacturer, you are pushing them -- two- and three-year leases," Hickey said, comparing strategy to priming the pump for both new and used cars. "You're going to sell a bunch of cars three years from now."

But while auto dealers like Hickey see the wisdom in pushing car leases, the deals aren't always kind to the dealers, themselves. They lose out on the back-end service, as leasing customers put only the minimum amount of maintenance into their leased vehicles.

"I think the leasing is about the manufactures realizing it is good for them," Hickey said. "But it's not all good for dealers. How much (maintenance) work are you going to do, besides change the oil?"

It remains to be seen how high leasing can rev in the Central Pennsylvania car market. Car buyers here are known for their conservative nature and a driving determination to squeeze value from their vehicles. Thus, leasing was never as popular in the midstate as it is in other markets.

John Rickards, president of the Bobby Rahal Automotive Group Harrisburg, said leases never accelerated much beyond 20 percent of his business, even in the boom years. When the car market crashed after the recession set in, lease deals dwindled to less than 10 percent of Rahal sales. The recent two-year upward trend in car sales has leases back to about 15 percent of sales at the Silver Spring Twp. dealership.

"Leases have improved," Rickards said. "But in our conservative area, it certainly hasn't been embraced as much as the rest of the country."

But in time, the local lease trend could help bring balance to the cream-puff starved used car market. Say, in about three years or so.

Gold hits nearly 2-week low as econ data saps demand

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Gold hit its lowest level in nearly two weeks on Friday, after upbeat data from the world's top economies suggested a global recovery is gaining traction, sapping demand for the metal.

Spot gold is the only precious metal in the red so far this year, down 0.4 percent from the end of 2012, while precious metals with industrial applications, including silver, platinum and palladium, have all risen in tandem with investor confidence in the economy.

Manufacturing in China and the United States grew this month at the fastest pace in about two years, while data suggesting German growth picked up boosted hopes for a swifter euro zone recovery.

Together with data showing a five-year low in U.S. jobless claims last week, the data sent Standard & Poor's 500 index to a seven straight session of gains on Thursday.

"It now seems that the stronger tone in global equity markets, coupled with a notable easing in European and US market tensions, is leading to short-term pressure on gold," said Ed Meir, an analyst at INTL FCStone, in a research note.

"We think (this) will continue for a little while longer given that negative chart picture are also contributing to the sloppier tone," he said.

Spot gold fell to $1,663.11 an ounce, its lowest in nearly two weeks. By 0320 GMT, it pared losses to trade flat at $1,667.44, headed for a weekly decline of nearly 1 percent, its sharpest loss in about a month.

U.S. gold inched down 0.2 percent to $1,667.30.

Though the 200-day moving average, at just below $1,663, provided some support for spot gold, technical analysis suggested that prices could test the lower level of $1,661, and possibly ease to the January 4 low of $1,625.79 over the next four weeks.

The price slump has triggered some physical buying interest, but many buyers were holding the purse strings on the sidelines of the market, with hopes that prices would further decline.

"There aren't too many orders, because prices are not low enough," said a Singapore-based dealer, expecting a further drop to $1,635 level to be a bigger draw to buyers.

Supportive of gold prices, Russia's central bank said it will continue to buy gold as it seeks to diversify its foreign reserves away from paper assets it views as risky.

Spot platinum inched up 0.2 percent to $1,680.99, on course for a 0.8-percent weekly gain, extending its winning streak to a fourth week, its longest in a year.
