Fiji - Fiji Military foresees major changes to draft Constitution

SUVA, Fiji (FBC) ---- The Fiji Military which has been vocal critic of the draft Constitution says there will be major revisions to the document through the Constituent Assembly.

Military spokesperson, Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga says people shouldn?t accept the document in its current form as the Assembly is only the first step in tailoring the Constitution for Fiji.

?But the Constitution Commission seems to have taken it upon themselves that they write the constitution. At least that?s the attitude that we see now and that they insist on going back and doing the consultation they?ve written. That is not the intention of government.?

The military doesn?t agree with provisions for a National Assembly to oversee the work of the parliament, it wants a smaller House of Representatives and the removal of provisions for a Great Council of Chiefs.

There are issues which Tikoitoga says will come before the Constituent Assembly.

?The constitution is a Fijian constitution, written for Fiji and it will be written in the interest of Fiji and not at the interest of other nations or NGOs that can only be done by Fijians.?

The military believes having too many entities will only waste tax payers money.

It has in its submission to the Constitution Commission proposed a parliament with 46 seats.
