College town sports passion of Syracuse strikes chord with Symetra golfers

Symetra Tour golfers Kendall Dye and Cara Freeman, in town to announce summer tour dates here, get a taste of Syracuse winter sports in Carrier Dome.

Kendall Dye loved the atmosphere but hated herself as she watched the Syracuse University-DePaul basketball game in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday.

Dye, a pro golfer in town for today?s announcement of dates for this summer?s LPGA Symetra Tour stop here, enjoys college basketball and always wanted to see SU play. But the downside was that she felt compelled to honor her hosts from the tournament and wear an orange shirt.

That would have normally been no biggie, except Dye played college golf at Oklahoma. That's the school whose biggest rival is Oklahoma State, a foe that wears the absolutely off-limit colors of black and, ugh, orange.

?Orange is almost against my religion,?? Dye said Thursday. ?I felt disloyal all day.??

Dye?s friend and fellow tour member Cara Freeman had a different kind of issue at the game. As a former golfer at Oregon State, whose school colors include orange, she thought she was toeing the community standard by wearing a coat of that color to the contest.

Wrong. It was pointed out to her that her wardrobe was the wrong shade of orange, a distinction she couldn?t see.

?Apparently my orange for Oregon State was not the correct orange for Syracuse,?? she said. ?It funny, clothes competing. Our orange is better than your orange.??

Fashion issues aside, the morning after the game both golfers said they enjoyed the contest and explained how local fervor over the correct hue highlights their appreciation of playing on tour stops in places like Syracuse.

Both players come from college town backgrounds, much like the one here, and can connect with a fan base that?s so locked in to one source of sports. The bond creates an instant foundation for chit-chat with fans they bump into during their stay here and guests they play with during the week.

?We love having something special to come to in Syracuse,?? Freeman said of the Syracuse game. ?When we?re in the community, we have things to talk about with people.??

This year?s event ? the Credit Union Classic - will be held during the week of July 22-28 at Drumlins Country Club?s East Course and will feature a field of 140 American and international tour professionals. This is the 18th straight year that the tour ? formerly known as the Futures ? will swing through town. Syracuse is the third-oldest stop on the tour.

Dye has played here for three straight years, while Freeman has competed the past two summers.

?There?s a lot of good people in this town that house us,?? Dye said. ?We develop relationships that last a lifetime.??

The tournament purse is $100,000 with the winner receiving $15,000. The top 10 money winners from the Symetra Tour automatically qualify for the LPGA Tour.

Organizers estimate that the economic impact of the event on the community will total about $350,000. The tournament also raises money for local charities, and has tallied in excess of $500,000 toward that end since its inception. This summer?s beneficiary is The First Tee of Syracuse.
